Hi! I am very new to this forum, so sorry if I have not stumbled upon a question similar to this one!!! I need some style minded brains to pick at!
My boyfriend I have just purchased our first home (a 2-bed unit) and have many disagreements over soo many aspects of the house (particularly paint!!). He is very modern and loves contemporary designs, whereas I am a lover of vintage and cosy features (though do find modern homes beautiful) I would love to find a balance between the two, particularly in our bedroom.
We have settled on a grey carpet, which has tints of blue and red through it (I can add a photo tonight when I have access to such advanced technology like a cd drive that works!) They aren't strong tints, but make it a darkish grey. The walls will be painted in Nippon Moonlight Which is a cool white sorta colour. The unit is open plan, you walk into the lounge room which is also the dining room and leads to the open kitchen. There will be a feature wall which will be Nippon Dolphin, which is a blue, but has a cool touch to it, we both agree it will match the carpet perfectly. The windowframes however are primrose, which probably will not match which may be a concern later on, but I suppose they can be hidden with curtains or blinds. I can't tell you much more as I have only been in the house once, however pictures will be taken this weekend and I can always add them. The furniture for the lounge and kitchen is all very modern, with white lounges, a black and glass entertainment unit and coffee table, black glass dining table, and I plan on adding little touches of blue where I can. Kitchen has vinyl floor with a marble grey and black square design. The kitchen counters are pink and browny coloured, which I think may clash, but I am ok with this as I intend to renovate the kitchen in the future.
Spare bedroom is same Nippon Moonlight with a beautiful purple feature wall, Nippon Celestial. Carpet is also same grey colour. This will not have a spare bed for now as we have two computers and a snake tank (yuck) to fill in it, however in the near future we will upgrade our bed and put my boyfriends bed into it. The room is a rectangle shape and will have a wall to wall desk furthest from the door which will have the comp (we'll get rid of one to fit the bed and buy a laptop which will fit in it better), and later on the bed will go between the desks and the door. The colour scheme in this room will be white, purple and touches of yellow or green (the snake tank has yellowy green leaves in them and would probably incorporate this into the scheme as I have a feeling that it will become quite an interesting centrepiece.)
The main bedroom.. the reason for this post (but wanted to share the themes throughout the house) is very undecided! We were originally going to have a red feature wall (Nippn Powder) with black features, as we wanted a very intimate and passionate room, but with the carpet having the blue tint in it, it really seems to clash with it. I think that we need more of a cooler colour, as this seems to have complimented the carpet in the other rooms. I couldnt sleep last night cause it was playing on my mind, but had a brainstorm and thought of charcoal as a feature wall, but am wondering if this is appropriate for the room. I will fill in michelles guide as best I can (remembering I have only been in the place once and have a terrible memory for details!)
Main colours throughout Internals
Ceiling /Cornice - I believe to be a cream now, but will be white
Walls - Currently a pink cream but will be Nippon Moonlight
Skirting / Architrave - will be same as ceiling (cooler white)
Windows / Reveals / Frames - The primrose windowframes (however I am loving the idea of having a sheer white see through curtain with a thick heavy curtain over that, mostly open to let light through). Will be a black I was thinking, or if that is too heavy could try implement the red into it?? So frames will not be seen...
Exposed Beams - Dont think so!
Doors - I think they were wooden doors, will be repainted into same as skirting I guess!
Window Treatments - Wanted to do curtains as mentioned above.
Flooring - Carpet - grey as mentioned earlier
Lighting - room has a huge beautiful bay window so is a very bright room. Was thinking to warm it up and make it my kinda cosy, could have big lamps on bedside table with a yellow light (or white?) and when on, I imagine would look really good against the charcoal wall, would give it a romantic glow.
So, just wondering what everyone thinks of the charcoal in the room, will it make it look too small, and what can we do about furniture and bits and pieces? Is the bay window a big part of styling the room, cause I would love to play up on that with the right advice. Otherwise, has anyone got any amazing ideas!?!? I do believe I have come to the right place for style ideas!!!
Thanks for reading this ridiculously long thread!!! Hope to meet you all as I ask a bizzillion questions over the coming weeks (or months!) about renovating our little home.
