Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jan 06, 2010 12:51 pm Hi there We are seriously considering putting in a new kitchen as our old one is just not working for me and is really horrible. Also if I go back to FT work then I really want a dishwasher!!! LOL It will most likely be a melemine or laminex flat pack kitchen with laminex benchtop, with either white or SS appliances (we currently have a white fridge and SS microwave which will be staying). I have checked out the laminex/polytec sites and it is a bit overwhelming with all the different colours you can pick!!! I was wondering what your suggestions would be for a nice classic colour/s which won't date - I was thinking white but there are quite a few different whites!!! and is that a bit boring??? I don't particuarly want totally "out there" but happy to have a little bit of colour. The problem is that colour is NOT my forte at all - I don't have an eye for it at all. The kitchen looks onto our lounge room (all in the same room). The current colours are: Kitchen has wall and floor cabinets Polished floorboards (pine) Walls currently cream (Wattyl Alabaster I think) - happy to change this Lounge - chocolate brown suede look furniture - wood (dark stain) feature wall - Wattyl Pepper I think??? kind of a dark green/grey - can be changed (is possibly a bit darkish for the room really but nice colour) The room is south facing so can be a little dark sometimes eg if the sun isn't shining I put the light on - but it does look out onto the back yard. Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks Rachael www.crittercottage.blogspot.com Re: Classic kitchen colour scheme ideas 2Jan 07, 2010 1:14 am Hi Racheal! When we went for our kitchen appointment, the manufacturer actually told us that one of the shades of white was a lot more expensive than the other, as it was a lot harder to match the door colour with the side panel colour (we're have vacuum formed vinyl). That might not be the case with flatpack kitchens as I'm sure they'd already be matched if you bought the whole thing. . . But I'm sure that, if you're going for a safe old white (like we are!!!. . . boring, but at least it has a chance of still looking a bit modern in 10 years time!), that any shade of white you choose will be just as good as another. . . why don't you just go with your instincts? It might be useful getting some paint colour chips from Bunnings too (of different whites). .. it's amazing how, when you compare 10 whites with another 10 whites, you can really see the yellows, pinks and greens coming out in them. Check out Grays Online for you appliances. . . we got fantastic prices on ours. .. but make sure you do your homework before. . . we got ex-demo models that Clive Peeters were getting rid of, they're top of the range, but I don't think that many people in Aus had heard of the make, so we ended up with a massive saving. Also, it might be good to go to a few kitchen showrooms for some colour ideas. .. they're not all caesarstone benchtops and polyurethane doors. . . we actually chose the same colour laminex cupboards for our pantry as our kitchen manufacturer had in their showroom. .. we're also having a laminex benchtop in the pantry that looks a bit like caesarstone if you're into that kind of look. Have you tried Ikea for their kitchens too? Re: Classic kitchen colour scheme ideas 3Jan 07, 2010 12:54 pm Hi Jodge Thanks for your reply. Today I went along to a showroom and WOW what a lot of colours!!! There must be about 10 different whites LOL. I'll keep searching, but I am looking at a flatpack option from Mr Ply & Wood who I think get Laminex to supply what you need as a flatpack. Also some other companies I have emailed but most are on leave at the moment for quotes. Will wait and see. I guess then I will need to decided on colours so the quote can be given. Yes I checked Ikea but they don't do anything other than standard cabinets and I need some custom made to fit some of my space. I did a bit of a search last night on here for other peoples kitchens and have a few ideas from that for colours but nothing concrete. cheers Rachael www.crittercottage.blogspot.com Re: Classic kitchen colour scheme ideas 4Jan 07, 2010 1:09 pm I think with your dark furniture a mostly white kitchen would be refreshing. My cupboards are Laminex White (see kitchen thread) not as stark as Polar White. Maybe add a different colour to the top cupboards or just the benchtop. Re: Classic kitchen colour scheme ideas 5Jan 07, 2010 1:20 pm Hey . . . that's good rachael! We're getting our wardrobe fixout from Mr Ply&Wood too! We designed all the panels ourselves and got quotes from a few different companies. . . they were by far the cheapest. Good luck with it all! SueH yes I was thinking that a light or white look would be best as I have dark furniture and it can get a bit dark as the room is south facing - if the sun isn't shining. I will have a look at your kitchen for some ideas too - thanks. Michelle here are the pics as requested. They have come out a bit dark looking - but you get the idea This is the actual kitchen. In my plan it will pretty much stay the same, however there will be a corner wall cabinet and the fridge will be moved right down to the door (garbage bins to be hidden) & have an overhead cabinet etc. The benchtop will move down a bit too (to fit a dishwasher) and we wont have a "breakfast bar" type hangover thing. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Currently the whole room is painted Cream - Alabaster, including the kitchen (except feature wall). I like it but kind of feel it may be a bit dated looking now?? This may be because I have had Cream walls for the past 15 years in the 2 houses I have been in LOL so I am happy to change this if you think it will make a good change but also happy to keep it too (Greg would like that so he doesn't have to repaint ). The man at Mr Ply & Wood today recommended these doors to me as they were fairly inexpensive, great for families with children and have 12yr warranty. He says the kitchen will still look great in 10 years if I get these - very durable. They are called Laminex Contour Finedge doors and come in about 68 colours. Here is a link http://www.laminex.com.au - it under Brands & Samples. Then, he pointed to a wall of Laminex square which he said could be benchtops - (which was a bit overwhelming) but I would like a caesar stone type look (but in Laminex of course - the cheap one too not the exy one - ah budgets!!). I did like the look of these doors. They didn't look too cheap and nasty at all. Anyway, I hope that helps a bit and look forward to your response. Thank you so much for this, it is very much appreciated. Regards Rachael www.crittercottage.blogspot.com Re: Classic kitchen colour scheme ideas 8Jan 08, 2010 2:42 pm Have just received a quote from one of the home improvement shops which is having a sale and their price is within our range!! YAY - and this is installed!!! - wow I am really excited about this as when I priced Mr Ply & Wood last night, they were very expensive - 5K for doors and cabinets only so far - not including drilling of hinges, benchtop or surround covers, handles, benchtop, kickboard, appliances..... and so on, plus we have to install. This quote includes the Laminate Doors and tops (plus everything else). I asked what type of door (as per the website) and he wasn't sure off the top of his head, but I'm guessing that it is the Contour Door with the 7 year guarantee (they have the wall of squares which is very scary for me with what I can choose - so many colours). It also includes a 40mm square form laminex benchtop. Of course I will double confirm everything but very excited at their price (thank goodness for a sale!!). www.crittercottage.blogspot.com Re: Classic kitchen colour scheme ideas 10Jan 09, 2010 6:24 am Rachael….do you still need some help??? We're having stipple seal in our laundry! If you want to see some in real life there's a setup on our kitchen manufacturer's little showroom. . . they're called Cobbitty Grove Kitchens and are in Narellan (check their opening hours though, as they may only be open Monday to Friday). . . We were just going to have plain old white in the laundry, but I saw the display when we went to choose the colours and had to have it. . . maybe I'll regret it in 10 years? Kinda like an avocado bathroom? We'll see, it's already getting made, so no time to change! Re: Classic kitchen colour scheme ideas 15Jan 09, 2010 8:54 pm Hey Rachael. . . just one more thing. . . if you want to get more cupboard space out of your kitchen. . . some friends of mine had their kitchen wall cupboards extended right up to the ceiling. . . then they stored the things that they didn't use too much right at the top. Re: Classic kitchen colour scheme ideas 16Jan 09, 2010 9:38 pm Hi Rachael, recently had our kitchen installed. We have laminex Paperbark cupboards and squareform bench in Blanc Stone. It looks great and fresh, but earthy too. Attached some pics for you to see those colours (the back of the breakfast bar is Formica Graphite). Kitchen still not finished, but hope it gives you some ideas..... good luck! buzz ETA... yay photos worked!!! We also used the peruvian clay for the kickers. I have a polished concrete benchtop and the splashback is cream stack laid tiles with a metallic feature tile the same color as the peruvian clay cabinets. I have also used parchment in my bathroom and laundry, with the stipple seal diamond gloss benchtops. Here are a few pics hope it helps.
