Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Nov 17, 2009 6:57 am Hi Michelle, We are about to build our first house and I am struggling with kitchen colours, I would appreciate some help. Originally we were just going to do the neutral thing and do whole kitchen white cupboards with a diamond gloss bench (like stipple seal) but thought this might be too much white and a bit sterile. Its a large galley style kitchen (6m backwall + 3.6m island) and we would like a bit of warmth in it. After seeing a lovely display home in sydney (the rep said they didn't know what colours were used in the kitchen) we are now thinking about: Island and opposite lower cupboards: Laminex smokey sappelle Overhead cupboards/pantry: Laminex White Splashback: White polished porcelain tiles Floor tiles: Light Beige polished porcelain tiles - (they are similar in colour to polytec Malt and can look slightly grey in some light) Paint: Beige royal 1/2 strength...not sure if this will appear a little greenish...not certain about this colour. Would like a feature colour somewhere? Unsure what to use as a benchtop, can't afford a stone so looking at laminex. Hubby would like a darker top (he likes Laminex Earthy) but I am not convinced that would work? What would you recommend. Do you think with glossy floor and splashback, we should stick with matt/natural cupboards/benches??? I'm not that adventurous with colours so any suggestions would be much appreciated! Kind regards, Kate Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 2Nov 17, 2009 5:37 pm firsttimer After seeing a lovely display home in sydney (the rep said they didn't know what colours were used in the kitchen) we are now thinking about I would ask again…..that’s ridicules that they don’t know what colours they have used…..more likely he doesn’t want to tell you. Go back and take a photo, I’ll tell you what they have used! Your question is quite long; I’ll try and get back to you. I can get a bit carried away! I rang back the display home because we don't live in Sydney and didn't have much luck getting any further info. I think you're right that they just don't want to tell! Anyway, what do you think of Tunisian stone diamond gloss benchtop with either a smokey sappelle or licorice linea island bench/lower cupboards? And perhaps still have white overhead cupboards/pantry along the backwall of kitchen? Will this look ok with a glossy/light beige floor? Is it normal to find this so difficult, lol??? Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 4Nov 22, 2009 12:28 pm Hi firsttimer, I'm thinking nearly exactly the same as you . Definately Tunisian Stone diamondgloss benchtop, laminex white top & bottom cupboards & either smoky sapelle or licorice linea in the island (either all under the benchtop or just the back panel of the island). So I'd love to hear what others think of this as well. I'd like a light greyish or light beige tile for my floors. Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 5Nov 24, 2009 11:42 am Hi farmmum, You know what they say about great minds...lol. What are you thinking as a splashback colour? We are thinking white but not sure if thats too boring? We will have to compare kitchens when finished, that is f i can ever work out a way to post photos, photobucket won't let me register for some strange reason and I don't know any other way! Hope your kitchen turns out as lovely as I think it will! Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 6Nov 25, 2009 12:43 pm Same for the splashback (this is getting freaky!), I'm thinking large white tile (as in 600 x300 - a friend just had them put into their kitchen & it looks great....and easy to clean ). I also thought it might be a bit boring, but I'm worried about introducing another colour and any coloured splashbacks I've seen with the Tunisian I haven't really liked. I'm now also thinking the same coloured laminate kicks as the doors, had originally picked a brushed aluminium but I don't like it against the dark wood colour - what about you? I'd love to see a piccy of your kitchen when finished, we're still awhile off starting to build. Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 7Nov 25, 2009 6:45 pm The 300x600 white tiles do look great, I saw them at a display house and they looked really fresh. I hadn't really thought about the kickboards, and like you we were going with the brushed aluminium...hmm maybe i need to have another look? Its really hard to decide, I haven't seen many kitchens with the smokey sappelle, bit nervous about using it cuz not we are sure whether just to do all lower cupboards and island or do pantry/broom cupboard as well....arghh! Our kitchen is still a fair way off too, just started excavating for the slab today but will keep you posted...hopefully will learn how to post photos by then!!! Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 8Nov 25, 2009 8:25 pm The only thing I would offer is not to use too much of it. Just my opinion, but I think the kitchen might look a little dark with too much of the dark timber. But I like light, airy kitchens which mightn't be your style. Best of luck with the build, it will start to get to the exciting bits soon for you! How much less than ceasar / essa is quantum Quartz? I heard it's cheaper and still great effect no joins. I wanted the diamond gloss but after I saw the joins I am not so sure Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 11Nov 26, 2009 3:46 am Thanks for the link Jess, very nice and different use of feature wood. I like it. By the way I love your place, checked out your blog and your kitchen looks stunning! Hi Delacruz, a 3 mt bench shouldn't need a join. We have a 3.6m island because thats the longest length we could get without a join/seam in the benchtop...Or are you thinking of having waterfall ends and thats where joins would be? I really haven't seen what the joins look like to be honest... Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 12Nov 26, 2009 4:03 am OK, Here goes. The kitchen guys emailed me a very poxy looking picture of my kitchen layout. The colours are dreadful and not true to life but have a look and let me know what you think...I asked them to do the island and underbeanch in smokey sappelle but they have done pantry as well. The benchtop is meant to be tunisian stone and other cupboards/splashback white. We have a very light glossy floor as well. I think this might be too much dark and not balanced, I like the idea of light cupboards up top, what suggestions can anyone make? The backwall is 6m long. http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/1705 ... lour12.png Here are the actual colours we have chosen on our floor tile... http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/6552/pb200694n.jpg Would love some feedback. Thanks Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 13Nov 26, 2009 5:28 am Maybe the brown is too dark as you say you either want the Tunisian stone top to stand out or the brown laminate. I love the colours mabe too much brown yes Therese Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 14Nov 26, 2009 5:36 am Hi first timer re the joins it's not the island bench it's my back wall that has a corner and a join will be right on the corner I am going to try to go back to the showroom I saw it take a photo and post it. I don't feel this aspect of the diamond gloss is a concern yourself as you don't have corners. Have you seen a large island in diamond gloss? It's scarry isn't it as that's such a hub in the house. Yes I would like waterfall but yours looks nice like that. I hope we can see what you decide later Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 15Nov 26, 2009 7:48 am firsttimer Thanks for the link Jess, very nice and different use of feature wood. Agree with Jess09, absolutely bee-u-t-ful with a white pantry! Or, if you are still worried about it being too dark you could do like me & have all the back wall cupboards in white & just the sappelle on the island.... Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 17Nov 26, 2009 5:52 pm Thanks for the input everyone, thinking I might just do the entire backwall white...is that too boring? I don't know if I need to tie the 2 areas together by having some dark along the backwall. Maybe just the pot drawers on either side of oven? Re: Kitchen colours, Smokey sappelle - need help with benchtop! 18Nov 29, 2009 5:42 am I would do the island bench, then to balance it all out, do the wall cupboards and pantry. Basically everything in the light colour, reverse to the Smokey Sappelle. What colour is your floor going to be? The floor colour is actually the light beige/ grey gloss tile in the photo that the colour chips are on. Sorry about the pm, read your post after I sent the other message!
