Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Sep 13, 2009 8:37 am Hi there Our house comes with a mulitcoloured slate floor, which for lots of reasons, we have decided to keep when we renovate. I'd like to bring out more the greys/blues in it (rather than the browns!) so would love some help with colours for kitchen cabinets, bench tops and adoining carpets. We are keen for a french provincial look in the kitchen which I think should work with the slate well? The slate runs through the whole house. Thanks for any suggestions! Re: Colour scheme to work with brown Kalahari slate 2Sep 13, 2009 9:38 am Without spending too much time here at the moment, but will try again later after you reply. How about a nice blue for the cupboards, and a lovely white to off white C/Stone or Quartz bench top Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Dulux Sea Crystal Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Colour scheme to work with brown Kalahari slate 3Sep 13, 2009 10:11 am Ooh, I hadn't thought of blue. Was thinking more grey/white. Blue could work though! I have alot of blue/white china pieces which I'd love to display. Do you think that would maximise the slate? Since we are keeping it, we would like to make it a bit of a feature. Re: Colour scheme to work with brown Kalahari slate 4Sep 13, 2009 12:16 pm Imageshack is down at the moment, so I could post your floor off your photo as close up. This is the best I could find for now. I think the blue for cupboards will pull the blue out of the slate and it will be seen a lot more. I can't believe how much better it is! I actually like the floor now! Could only hope that ours would look that good. Will start to look for blue kitchens for inspiration now Let me know if a better photo of the slate will be helpful. THANKS so much Re: Colour scheme to work with brown Kalahari slate 6Sep 13, 2009 8:53 pm I think your floor will look better! The tiles are longer which gives more depth to the tiles. I’m glad you like it! I'm just concerned that blue cabainets will be difficult to match to the open plan living area. (slate in the kitchen, carpet in the open plan.) Maybe something more neutral would be easier to work with? Thanks so much for your advice! Because the new kitchen had to fit the rest of the house (lots of cedar and exposed beams etc.) we picked Victorian ash timber veneer for most of our cabinets. It goes well with the floor but it is light enough to look modern. We also picked very streamlined cabinets with shadowline finishes to try to make the kitchen look up to date. We have a row of upper cabinets with white glass doors for a contrast. So I thoroughly agree with using a very light timber to try and blend in with your floor. I haven't any photos at the moment as we have mislaid our downloading lead but hopefully I will be able to post photos soon. I think your ash timber colour is lovely also but it will highlight the browns in your floor that you were trying to steer away from in your 1st post. Good luck with your decisions I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top. 1 3328 To put anything over slate you will need to put self level compound over the entire area as slate various in thickness and is very un even. To install most types of… 1 375 just pull up the slate. If you go over the top, your tiles would not have an even surface to be glued to. Im no tiler, but i can imagine a couple of things being an issue… 1 312 |
