Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 23, 2009 8:43 pm DH would like white 2-pac cupboards in our kitchen and we've decided on Laminex Platinum Micro squareform benchtops. The kitchen will be an island layout with pantry, cooker and fridge along the wall (stainless steel splashback) and the sink and dishwasher opposite on the island. As we plan to use the breakfast bar as our main dining space the back of the island will take some beating from the kids feet so I've been thinking it would be better to use a darker laminex. I've put some pic's of what we have planned for the layout, although the island will have waterfall edges and be 1200mm wide (but I couldn't do that with MVH). We'll have kwila timber floors. The kitchen will face the lounge area and we have a black modern square-ish lounge suite. I'm planning to maintain the black and white theme for furniture and rugs. Walls planned to be Dulux Hogs Bristle or Male. DH & I pawed over the laminex colourchart this morning and decided we liked the look of "Stringybark" and "Fudge Stream" for the back of the island. We have ordered some laminex samples so we can see the white, Platinum Micro and the two contrast options together. Which of these would you choose and why? Are there any changes you would suggest? However...if I had to choose one for the island I would probably go the Stringybark. I think it blends really nicely with the Platinum Micro and will also fit in with your black and white colour scheme. Re: Thoughts on this contrast for kitchen? 5Aug 23, 2009 11:13 pm *frosty* What program are you using for the design? Looks great!! I did the initial designing in Alno's Kitchen Planner, but this picture is from My Virtual Home software, which I turned to when I tried to layout my ensuite, wir and bathroom areas. www.mvh.com.au I found it a little frustrating at first but once I worked out a few tricks I could change room dimensions and get it going ok. You need a pretty decent bandwidth - I've found it really slows down once you add furniture. SuH I have Fudge Stream in my ensuite and powder room and I absolutely love it. I went searching your posts to see if you have any photos of it on here - didn't find any of your bathroom, but found the kombi pics - LOL! Very funky! Actually, just found the thread where you talked about the neighbourhood wierdos being the reason you've taken your pics down. Completely understand - I've been tossing up whether to blog our house build here and very wary about the whole thing - the internet is too accessible and uncontrollable. DH and I talked about having it horizontal, but decided against because of the risk of it not lining up across the doors. I might ask our kitchen supplier if they would cut the panels from a single sheet. I guess Murphy's law would mean some dumb-arse would put the hinges on the wrong side of one door or something... Mmmm... might stick with boring vertical stripes after all... Thanks for your replies so far, guys, Kylie Re: Thoughts on this contrast for kitchen? 6Aug 24, 2009 8:42 am SuH However...if I had to choose one for the island I would probably go the Stringybark. I think it blends really nicely with the Platinum Micro and will also fit in with your black and white colour scheme. I said this too I have mine joining up exactly on each cupboard door in the ensuite, horizontal is the way to go on a big area like that, whichever one you choose. Re: Thoughts on this contrast for kitchen? 7Aug 24, 2009 9:58 am SuH I said this too LOL - Yes, I did see! Was getting a little droopy when I posted my reply so I just took mental note of what everyone said so far. Very evenly divided! The more I think about it, the more I want the back of the island to be a feature for people sitting in the living area (as opposed to it fading into the background). The fudge stream is bold and modern, but don't know whether it would become "too much" very quickly being in our face all the time. I think stringybark is a little more conservative and so would be more universally appealling and less likely to date. I'm trying to avoid picking a favourite until I see the samples, but I am definitely interested in what people think. Especially about how they would feel having those panels beside them while they sit in the living area. Kylie Re: Thoughts on this contrast for kitchen? 9Aug 25, 2009 4:22 pm CarolineJ Have you seen Licorice Linea? That would look good too... Yes - we had a bunch together and then we had to narrow down to five choices to order the samples. Does anyone know whether I can order another five if we hate the ones we chose the first time? I've been searching the forums and comparing all the photos and references to stringybark and fudge stream - it doesn't help - I like them all If anyone has seen fudge stream used in a kitchen that would be great! Kylie Re: Thoughts on this contrast for kitchen? 11Aug 25, 2009 5:52 pm my vote is for the Fudge Stream as I think it would pick up accents from the floor but works well with the grey of the benchtop good luck Re: Thoughts on this contrast for kitchen? 12Aug 25, 2009 6:50 pm I have to say… I love the Fudge Stream! I'm pretty sure it is stringybark on the bar back and the bottom cupboards and they have used it in the bathroom as well. I think it looks great!! Building Atlantique by Carlisle Homes in Alamanda, Point Cook Alamanda Stage 8B Re: Thoughts on this contrast for kitchen? 15Sep 02, 2009 7:59 am I like the Stringybark and it's one that we are considering ourselves for the back bar. My only concern is about whether it would date quickly. Re: Thoughts on this contrast for kitchen? 16Sep 02, 2009 9:34 am ozzybird My only concern is about whether it would date quickly. I usually choose safe colours to avoid it looking too dated down the track. My thoughts with this is, the back of the bar is only a small area so won't cost too much to change down the track once it starts to date (or if we really hate our choice LOL!). After getting the samples, we decided we like Fudge Stream over the Stringybark. Fudge is a little browner than I thought it would be though - a similar effect with varying shades of grey would be perfect! I'm thinking of asking for the large-size samples in Fudge Stream and Elegance (just to throw another option into the mix ). Kylie Were struck with: Colorbond Ironstone Grey roof and cream windows. What color should we render and paint the garage door to tone down the cream windows? Farm House, will… 0 26564 No. It's not original.
