Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 05, 2009 9:22 am Ok so we have planned a basic 2800mmx 3200mm spare room, which in the future ( a few years away) we will use as a nursury & then childs room. I'm wondering what the best way to utilise the room is. We will need the computer etc in there but will only take up the size of a desk. I don't want to put a bed in there because they take up too much room & never be used. I don't want it to be wall to wall bookshelves & wardrobes either. Opinions please? Re: Best Way To Utilise Spare Room? 4Aug 05, 2009 11:44 am I have an ottoman sofa db bed which is great for when guests come to stay (not very often) and a desk for work/sewing in my spare room. the ottoman sofa bed is great as it visually takes up less space as it doesn't have the arms of a standard sofa - day beds like previous suggestions would also work with some scatter cushions. I also have a small bookcase next to the ottoman which doubles as a low bedside table - i had a friend make it for me - its like a cube box (with 1 shelf) which my quarto books live in stacked vertically and a shelf on which the books are stacked horizontally. also, I have a bookcase mounted on the wall above the desk (which frees up floor space) - i used the hungarian shelves design off the instructables website and it looks great Re: Best Way To Utilise Spare Room? 6Aug 05, 2009 5:12 pm Girlfriday, you reminded me of one very important aspect. My sewing machine. Yay, I will have to get a bigger desk for that & a cabinet for all my fabric & maybe to put the machine in when I'm not using it. I have one of those Aerobeds for when guests stay, which is queen size. For that to fit in the room, I will probably have to keep furniture to a minimum. I think I would love a nice dressing table in there too. One I can sit at & have all my make-up & perfumes at. If I keep all the furniture white or timber, then we can use it as nursury furniture when the time comes. Thanks for all the ideas girls "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. That's why I'm trying to make the room a gender neutral colour (planning a dusty red/orange colour) and the furniture we buy will have to be either big & able to be funtional in a nursury or small enough to use in a different area of the house. Planning either white or timer furniture. "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. Re: Best Way To Utilise Spare Room? 13Aug 08, 2009 8:19 am I use this website: www.room328.com It lets you download a program, put in your room size, wall colours etc & then various furniture pieces. It takes a bit of getting used to but it's free!! "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality" -John Lennon Our house was completed 8 years ago.
