Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge Re: Hallway Niche 101 21May 14, 2009 10:52 am thanks for that idea, maurita. are you saying they "framed" the niche? i was thinking in the same line, though. wonder if this frame/shelf would look great in the niche. but it is meant to be horizontally orientated. hmmmm... another idea i am contemplating on is to add swirly wall decals, stickers or stencils. what do you guys think? They put it around the outside edge, on the actual wall not inside the niche. I hope this makes sense, it is kind of hard to explain. I should have taken a photo of it at the time, i could even ask the builder if they have a photo of it as i still keep in contact with them every so often. If i do get a pic i will post it on here for you. Re: Hallway Niche 101 23Sep 22, 2010 12:07 am does anyone know what the lights are called? I dunno if the electrician is being lazy but they have put these awful lights that are popping out of the niche and they seem to think they cannot get a flushed downlight in the niche! Re: Hallway Niche 101 24Sep 22, 2010 6:33 pm Ours are just standard downlights, exactly the same as all the others in our ceilings. A piece of the timber framing across the top had to be cut out prior to plastering though, so that the downlight would sit flush against the top of the niche. Re: Hallway Niche 101 25Sep 30, 2010 9:20 am Hi all, I am so glad I found this thread!! I love the ideas in this thread! I am also really struggling with ideas on what to do with my niches. I have one at the entrance which at the moment I have two black vases with fake white orchids in them. I really want to paint the inside of this one a deep red but then I am struggling with whether or not I should continue with that same colour in the ones in the hallway from the entrance to the kitchen/living area. What do you think? I'm at the very begining of building, well actually still at our last pre-start, and we were getting a couple niches in our front entrance also. They are either side of our theatre room doors and the wall is not a double cavity, i.e. so will be double the thickness with no cavity. I wanted downlights in these niches but the builder is telling me that they will need to design the walls so that there is a cavity between the walls, about another brick thickness more, so taking up that little more room into the theatre room. Just wanted to find out if anyone could advise on if this is definitely the case or can downlights be installed regardless? Might I add there will be a slab above this area. Cheers in advance! Re: Hallway Niche 101 27Mar 23, 2011 3:51 pm Hi all, I'm just quickly jumping into this discussion on niches. We have a niche in our hallway and the electrician said that new standards mean that you cant have enclosed downlights because of the heat buildup. I was a bit disappointed but I'm ok with the end result. It does make the entrance more special. I hope this is relevant to the discussion. http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz186/robinred55/DSC01885.jpg Handover February 2011 Happy with our home Re: Hallway Niche 101 28Mar 23, 2011 3:57 pm Very nice Robin! Re: Hallway Niche 101 29Mar 23, 2011 3:59 pm Thanks mclaren. I'm happy with it. They did have to make the wall a bit thicker and all up with the downlight it cost $240. It's a pain about the light but I don't think the end result is too bad. I like the normal downlights better. I wonder if we were spun a tale by a lazy electrician although the light does get hot. We have a standard downlight in ours and they did cut out a big circle in the timber frame to recess the downlight in so it is flush with the "ceiling" of the niche. DH noticed the other day that the downlight is looking a tad charred! The white downlight has turned brown and yellow! I'm a bit worried that it will start a fire. So I'm not turning the light on until we have an electrician come and have a look! Oh and I love your floral arrangement - I noticed that before I noticed your light! We were also told by the electrician that the metal flushing on the corners can go very hot with a normal downlight and is a fire hazard. Maybe our electricians weren't so anal after all. They will have down lights as well. I am planning on having vertical rectangular two mirrors placed on the back wall of each niche and I have two slender ebony statutes to place in front of each mirror. For a different look, I was also thinking that I can occasionally remove the statutes, turn off the down light and place tea lights in front of each mirror. Should be pretty! Re: Hallway Niche 101 34Apr 14, 2011 9:33 pm I do like the look of the niche's.... but can I ask the ones who have already got them.... how often do you put the lights on in them? Every night or just when visitors come for a lovely visual effect. Re: Hallway Niche 101 35Apr 15, 2011 10:45 am mapcalla I do like the look of the niche's.... but can I ask the ones who have already got them.... how often do you put the lights on in them? Every night or just when visitors come for a lovely visual effect. My light is on every night. Due to the layout/positioning of my furniture I don't have a side table with a lamp or a corner to put a standard lamp in - so mine is used for "mood" lighting. That light teamed with my under cupboard lighting in my kitchen area make for nice comfortable lighting while watching tv at night!
