Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Apr 19, 2009 9:20 pm Was just wanting some advice on colour mixing and number of colours to use in our house for walls. We are going with different colours of white: * Bright white for ceilings and skirting boards. * lemon white for walls. * and one more colour for windows Do you choose 4 colours that complement each other and use that around the house or just stay with 2 colours and use furniture and accessories to give the house warmth? Do you normally paint the ceiling and skirting board the same colour? Are there any rules to follow when painting the house mostly white? Can you have the bedrooms a different colour, if so how do you get everything to flow if you change the colour scheme from white to say a beige colour for one bedroom, will this look at of place? Just a little confused and need convincing on which way to go Any advice would be very helpful Re: rules to follow when painting the house mostly white? 2Apr 19, 2009 9:26 pm Don't know about 'rules' Kris, but we are using 3 shades of white - 1 for the ceiling/cornice, another for the walls & a 3rd for the architraves & skirtings. And we are going shades of white on the outside, too. Colour accents inside will come thru accessories, & with garden plants/flowers on the outside. That way I can change the accent at a whim.......which I am apt to do! Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: rules to follow when painting the house mostly white? 3Apr 19, 2009 9:36 pm We have done the white thing in our postwar. We have picture rails across all our walls. So we have a creamy white for the main wall and a brighter white for the ceiling, cornices, picture rails, skirting boards and architraves. I think the two shades is more than enough to differentiate without needing anymore colours. It looks neat, framed and clean... We have very high ceilings though (and those picture rails...) so this may make a difference. We have the white in all our living areas, but the study is green and the main bedroom is Hog Bristle. When you sit in the lounge, you see a hint of the green, which is actually really nice amongst all the white. It makes a change from having the same thing everywhere and doesn't look out of place at all. Re: rules to follow when painting the house mostly white? 4Apr 19, 2009 10:00 pm Thanks for your reply guys! Thinking of keeping all white and a touch of colour on the walls for the master bedroom. Like Hammerhead said so much easier to add colour and warmth through accessories. Just have to get the right combo happening Re: rules to follow when painting the house mostly white? 5Apr 19, 2009 10:11 pm I was wondering if you have kids or plan to have them? The reason I ask is because a friend of mine had her new house painted with white walls and totally regrets it as she has a 2 year old and 9 month old. She is constantly wiping dirty marks off the walls and you can see the wipe marks now eg in the entry hallway as the light shines in from the sidelights at the front door and highlights the wall. I think she is going to paint a dark feature wall there now to hide it all. I also have young kids so I am going for Chalk Beige which is a light beige colour. I'm not suggesting that you do the same, but just give the white or light colour some more thought if kids are involved Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: rules to follow when painting the house mostly white? 6May 03, 2009 8:33 pm In a previous house a color consultant suggest we use a half tint of the wall color for the skirting boards and quarter tint for the ceilings. It came up quite well, however may not work too well for white Re: rules to follow when painting the house mostly white? 7May 05, 2009 8:55 am Thopught I might just tack a quyestion on to this existing thread. I have just finished painting a long hallway in a 1930s house. It looks great. I did flat Bone White on the walls and High Gloss Antique White USA on the trims and skirts. My question is what colour should I do the doors? Shall I continue with the Antique White USA? In the High Gloss? Or lessen the gloss? Or go for another shade of white? What would be the overall effect of either of those choices? There are seven doors in the hallway so I want to get it right. There is evidence of water on the head reveals. That could have happened during the build, or may be happening currently. There are water stains above a couple of windows… 2 3826 "is it exempt or do I need to get permission from council" Call your Council and ask them 1 1534 1 1914 |
