Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Apr 07, 2009 5:36 pm Hi all, I've got a large lounge with lots of windows and cathedral ceilings, very airy and light. Almost too airy - we're getting new sofas and a new rug and I'd like to use the opportunity to bring a bit more warmth into the room but I'm really not sure how. The walls are a very very light grey which can look mauvish in the afternoon or electric light, with a sort of elephant grey trim. We have charcoal blinds - clearly a grey theme happenning. But very honeyish polished pine floors. I was thinking of charcoal sofas originally but then it's all a bit severe and I want something more cosy. So brown? Tan? Or is there uch a thing as warm grey? But will that be too much grey? And what about a rug? I am feeling really at a loss so any advice or opinions appreciated. Jane Re: Need help warming up my room 2Apr 07, 2009 5:42 pm I wouldn't use brown... if you want a warm grey you'd be looking at a Taupe colour I guess. But be careful that all your greys work together. If you go for Taupe coloured couches, you could use a warm colour in the rug and matching cushions and maybe some artwork. A cosy red, or burnt orange... something like that? But make sure it works with your floorboards. But if your paint has a hint of mauve in some light, what about using a deep purple colour as the highlight colour? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. The last rental we had had dark grey carpets and it looked quite good! I used to have an art site bookmarked that had a really nice red and grey piece, but do you think I can find it now? I'll have another look later and if I find it I'll post it up. After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: Need help warming up my room 8Apr 08, 2009 7:43 pm Thank you all for the suggestions. I have been wondering about red, it's a bit nerve wracking! I guess it's just a matter of finding the right shade so that it goes ok with the floorboards. Otherwise, if I chicken out, I like the idea of taupe. Many thanks, Jane Re: Need help warming up my room 9Apr 09, 2009 9:16 pm Red is good. We have dark chunky brick internal walls in our dungeon like lounge room. That's the way it was when we bought the place. My wife swore she would never have another red lounge after our old burgandy coloured lounge of 22 years finally was sent to Lifeline. She came home one day and said "I've found our new lounge. It was fire engine red, with black piping. She bought a red and black rug to go with it. It just lit the place up,,, and we love it. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Can anyone help with the layout of my living room, it seems that no matter what I do it never looks right.
