Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Apr 02, 2009 6:26 pm Hi Michelle and everyone else, I've been browsing the site for a couple of weeks now - you give such great advice to people and I think it's so generous of you to give your time to helping people on this forum. We are getting ready for prestart and are realising how much work and how many decisions actually go into building a house! If you get time I'd love if you (and anyone else) could help me get started on our colour scheme. I'll post our plan as well so you can see the layout of the kitchen and house. It's not shown on this plan - but we have closed in the lounge with a wall, but left a gap at each end. We have also made the robes in the bedrooms doubles. These photos are taken in the small villa we are currently renting (floors in this rental are an off-white or creamy (?) porcelain) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Most of my furniture is brown/dark brown. I don't mind replacing this stuff eventually if it doesn't suit the colour scheme I want for the house (but if I can incorporate what I already have that would be good!). Current dining table: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I am wanting the colour scheme of the house to be greys/whites. This is what we are thinking: Bedrooms and lounge: carpet (grey) Flooring: Large porcelain tiles - white/off-white (However, I have been chopping and changing my mind between tiles and really light timber flooring) Kitchen cupboards: I would like a dark grey. What do you think of Formica Storm? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Or an alternative could be Laminex new graphite, but I'm not sure if I really like it. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Benchtop: If we go laminate, we wanted diamond gloss White Valencia - but I don't think our builder allows the diamond gloss selection. We are going to get a few quotes for a stone benchtop and maybe go with that - depending on budget. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Bathrooms - Haven't even really started thinking about them yet! Do you think these colours would look okay with the furniture I already have? Will a white benchtop look okay with a shiny porcelain white floor - or do you think it will look too much? I would love some pointers, and to know if you think what I'm going for is heading in an alright direction. I would like to incorporate a deep red as a feature - but this would be done in terms of black/white/red art or accessories etc, rather than in kitchen fittings. I really like these kind of looks (below), but do you think they are too 'cold' looking? The way around a cold room is to add warm colours, like in the cushions and accessories. In the second photo there are ascents of green, even though a cool colour it still looks really good. Very nice……if you keep to your plan on what you like, you are not going to have any problems at all. I would go with the Storm for your cupboards, only because I don’t like to see 2 patterns together, they end up counting each other out sometimes. Very nice! Would you say Formica Storm is a blue-grey? The lady at the laminex shop referred to it as that, but I don't want it to look blueish at all - just dark grey! I think I struggle with colours a bit! (any idea what colour those walls were?). As for coldness, not sure cold is right, maybe a bit stark, but its the floor tiles. IMO I think it would warm up and feel more homey with timber flooring. Personal preference though. Maybe even a bit of extra colour on the floor tiles would help. Possumchops Now the proud owner of 3.7acres of Serenity. Colour selection completed! Soon to go to council. Re: Colour advice 5Apr 05, 2009 3:36 pm Yeah I have been chopping and changing my mind between wood and tiles. I guess my concern with wood is that it won't really support the colour scheme I like - white/red/black/grey - but I'm not sure. I only really like the really light coloured wooden floor. Plus I have been told wood is very hard to maintain and shows up a lot of dust. But I guess with whiteish tiles I am also going to have to be very careful with maintaining the grout. Yes the formica Storm is a blue grey! If you want a solid grey I would look at Asphalt, it’s a true grey. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Colour advice 7Apr 05, 2009 6:23 pm Hey karakarakara, I have a grey, white and red house and still like it after a year! I have to say there's not a lot of us who like cool colours . I have a Laminex Charcoal kitchen, clear glass splashback (I know, how boring ) and all my furniture is also Laminex Charcoal and a bit of Polar White, I have charcoal carpet and stone grey tiles, Dulux White on White on walls, silver windows, three different greys in exterior and a bright red front door. I have a red sofa, red/white/grey cushions, still looking for a rug though! Dining table is glass and steel and chairs are black leather and steel. As Michelle said, you need to be looking for true greys as grey can be a bit of a pain and when you make your selections take all your other samples with you - you will quickly see if what you're looking at has got any brown/blue/green in it. Good luck . Re: Colour advice 8Apr 07, 2009 10:52 pm Thanks Michelle and Mek. Mek - your house sounds very nice. haha greys are so hard - see Asphalt to be looks kind of brown, but I do like the colour and it was one I had been looking at. Do you think Asphalt kitchen cupboards would look alright with white benchtop, white/off white porcelain tiles, black leather couch and deep red used as feature (such as a rug like in the picture I posted)? I guess I'm tryignt o factor my furniture colours in a lot because the house is open plan, therefore you can see the kitchen from the couch etc and when you walk into the family/kitchen/dining/games area you will be seeing it all in the one view. Thanks so much for all your replies - I really appreciate it. It's so helpful to talk ideas through.
