I must be out of the loop! Re: SMH Article on the out-going trends.... 2Apr 01, 2009 12:34 pm Good read, funny! Its a bit rough with all this in and out stuff though, I say go for what you like best. Personally, I don't get the whole wallpaper revival, but hey, I'm not very stylish! ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: SMH Article on the out-going trends.... 5Apr 01, 2009 9:21 pm I can see where they're coming from. A lot of the trends of today have been trendy before, and will date very quickly (my personal taste means those trends were never a consideration for me). I guess I'm a bit older than a lot of people here and have seen a lot of it before. My theory is that if I'm old enough to have seen it before, I'm too old to have it again (goes for decorating style and clothes). Judie Re: SMH Article on the out-going trends.... 7Apr 03, 2009 2:18 am I don't agree with pretty much everything they've said... Wallpaper - done right as a feature this can be timeless. They've been using wallpaper over here in North America for years and it's never gone out of fashion. Like I said, done right and it can look fabulous. The baroque look - again has a timeless quality Chandeliers - well I don't know anyone who put one in their toilet, but in the right space it can be the feature of the home. Timber Panelling and Stacked Stone - everyone loves using 'natural' materials Polished Concrete - this goes with the 'industrial' look which works in many places where people are living - converted warehouses, loft apartments etc. Star ceilings - works in a Home Theatre but I haven't heard of them being anywhere else... The key is everything in moderation - and not all of these things work for everyone, and not all of these things work in every situation. Here's some examples of the above where it works and is timeless Polished concrete (note the conrete bench top as well). Ask another one and you will get a different answer. This is why I don’t follow the latest trends, before you know it……you are sitting back admiring all your hard earned money you have poured into your homes, only to then read……everything you have done is now NOT the trend and you are last years fashion!!! NOT GOOD, for the wallet and your feelings. I have said this before……JUST because the fashion magazines write about it, show photos of it, and all the display homes have it…(whatever that is for the moment) doesn’t mean you all have to have it. Nuts!! In regards to decorating with a trend I think if you really really like it just do it minimally so if does go really out of fashion and/or you don't like it anymore it's easily rectified! Re: SMH Article on the out-going trends.... 12Apr 03, 2009 8:54 am Well said Michelle!! Muzzman, I hated each of those pictures! - The polished concrete looks like its just been prep'd for a nice wooden floor to be laid! - That wallpaper looks like a kids scribble, or maybe its just that hideous chair in the photo!! - The stacked stone there dwarfs that room, maybe they should've spent some more money on better lighting there! - No comment on the modern chandelier, and not many of us have palaces which is pretty much the only place I'd have an old one. - Star ceilings, jurys out with me, looks pretty wow at first, but I like darkness and no distractions for my movies... Anyway, theres my rant, its good though that everyone has differing opinions on this stuff though because if not, we'd all have the same house!! ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: SMH Article on the out-going trends.... 14Apr 03, 2009 8:57 am This is exactly why I never pay any attention to those "slow news day" articles. Everything chosen for our home has been chosen for a specific reason - we love it. Nothing more, nothing less. Fear of it dating / resale factors play no part in any of our decisions. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: SMH Article on the out-going trends.... 15Apr 03, 2009 9:31 am You should see my powder room wall......flowers.........brown flowers, I love them and I don't care if they date or if no-else likes them, as soon as someone gives me a negative comment I will cut their tongue out and flush it then I will ask them very politely to leave Re: SMH Article on the out-going trends.... 16Apr 03, 2009 9:34 am Well I'm not a fan of wallpaper at all but I liked that red wallpaper. What a terrific effect just as a border print. It really makes a feature of that corner. My first thought was wow.. I wonder if we could have something like that. And from a confirmed wallpaper hater! the modern chandelier I also liked but not in my home. the concrete kitchen bench and floor nice but not for us. though we did consider polished concrete flooring at one stage until i checked out the looks we could afford and realised it wasn't practical for us anyway. . the rest is definitely not for me. lol just showed hubby the wallpaper and he patted me on the shoulder and said, "yup, keep it in your head." hehe so he didn't like it either. Re: SMH Article on the out-going trends.... 18Apr 03, 2009 10:34 am At the end of this artical I was thinking well I can honestly say a few of those out ideas are ideas I still love and think can really make work in peoples homes. I am sure all the decorating ideas that the writer has voted as being OUT are things that alot of people use to stamp their individuality on their homes and make their homes, THEIR homes. (Could I say THEIR anymore ) If you like pink, purple and orange polka dots on your dining room wall as a feature go for it. This I am not a fan of but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. You could make it look awesome in your space. Its what makes you happy in your space. Unless your are building to sell your house then you are the only one who is going to live in it and as long as you love what you have chosen then thats all that matters. Just because chandeliers are in doesn't mean you have to have one but if chandeliers go out and you love chandeliers and the style of your home is going to suit them...........go for it. Even if you made your home as subtle and natural as you possibly could with no IN pieces, if you sell your home the purchaser already has in their head what they can do to make it THEIRS. Try not to think of these things as IN or OUT but a way of individualising your home. They are all things you can change if you end up getting sick of it. Imagine if we all liked the same thing and the same style and we stuck only to decorating with whats IN. You would go nuts trying to keep up. Thats why RE decorating was invented, so we could adapt our homes as we pleased. What I think is coming IN could be horrible in my space but in yours it could be just what you have been searching for. I personally believe your home is your sanctuary, especially in these economic times where it is also our safe place............make it a reflection of your personality and use whatever is IN or OUT to achieve it. Wow.....I couldn't stop writing sorry for the long post. Re: SMH Article on the out-going trends.... 19Apr 03, 2009 11:07 am - no no Sue, your wallpaper is wonderful!! Actually haven't seen it but knowing your taste it probably looks incredible and will make a complete contradiction out of me!! ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Who is the person that one day wakes up and says…..wallpaper, its out as of today! Who cares what one person says. For the life of me I have still not found out WHO sets the trends!!!!! Personally I don’t care, what’s a trend? I’ll tell you what a trend is, this is how I have seen it here on this forum WOW….look what PD are offering in their homes!!! YES PD have some amazing selections and decoration, but they all have the same! Now look at those people who don’t want a brown tile and can’t get any other colour! If I have to hear that again I’m going to pull my hair out! What gives the tile shop the right to dictate to their customers what they can and cannot have? Ohhhhh, I could go on and on!
