Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Mar 11, 2009 3:44 pm I am thinking of making my own eyelet curtains to save a lot of money, but was wondering if it is difficult. Has anyone else done it? Also I was wondering what coloured curtains people use. Can you pick a curtain colour before your house is built or would it be best until you have moved in so you can visualize everything? Are you ok at making other curtains? If so then I would have thought eyelets might be a bit easier, not having all the gathering to do? Though the actual eyelet bits I guess could be hard. Really have no idea, I am not a seamstress, but I am looking for some nice eyelet ones for my DD's room atm ... not much out there online "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. If you want them to blend in with your walls then picking a colour to match your paint should be easy enough??
Personally I chose to wait as I had no idea what we wanted!! Bargin! I couldn’t make them for that! They aren’t backed, they are quite sheer, but that’s what I wanted, very soft and flowy. It's one thing to sew pinch pleats, etc but I don't think I'd be able to get those holes & the rings right Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Has anyone made eyelet curtains? 7Mar 11, 2009 6:58 pm You buy a tool that does the eyelets.
You have to remember to do a double or triple layer of fabric where the eyelets are going to hold them firm, and the fabric doesn’t rip while you are opening and closing them. It does sound like a lot of work I guess... I'm not sure what to do. How much would you be looking to buy blockout eyelet curtains? Re: Has anyone made eyelet curtains? 13Mar 11, 2009 8:22 pm Southies!!! You always come up with the goods! thanks for the link, it's better than any I've seen so far. Don't happen to have any with links to nice kids' ones in your bag of tricks do you? (kidding)
Mich the ones you've got sound exactly like what I want for DD. She has roller shutters to keep light out so it would just be something soft and pretty I'm after. Will check out spotlight too. I am thinking solid will be easier to match with things, but I am interested to hear your thoughts
I've got no idea what colour to use for my curtains... Re: Has anyone made eyelet curtains? 17Mar 11, 2009 9:40 pm fitnhealthy, I am getting a bright pattern for my DS's room, it matches his bedspread. Also, he is only 3 so I think he will appreciate a pattern.
For DD I am imagining a sheer in a colour like lilac, light green, white or pink, ideally with little butterflies or dragonflies or bows embroidered or embossed on them. So a slight pattern. Every other room I'm going plain, but every other room is blinds, with plain sheers over some. Re: Has anyone made eyelet curtains? 18Mar 11, 2009 9:45 pm Thanks Donuts, the other option might be solid fabric with a soft pattern... I will have to start keeping an eye out for fabrics and curtains
In spotlight today they had a little curtain display set up and it had two colours one each end. For example one end was chocolate and tan both at the same end. Not sure if they were sewn together or not, but it looked really good. Has anyone seen this? Sorry for all the questions Re: Has anyone made eyelet curtains? 19Mar 13, 2009 9:41 pm Well I went to Spotlight today and bought everything I need for the kids' rooms
Unfortunately they had very little for little girls' rooms with eyelets in fact they had very little for girls' rooms full stop IMO! They had a huge range of tacky sparkly garish tab tops in all shades of pink *yawn* not very inspiring... So I ended up getting her some simple white sheers with circles embossed on them; I got it by the metre but the hole to put the rod in is already done at the top so all ready to hang; and I got a 'valance' rod & bracket to hang them off (turns round the corner to the edge of the window). For DS I got a red curtain rod with little trains at the end to hang his tab tops off; very 'cutesy' but hey I'll only be able to do this once in his life and they will go nicely with his 'motor club' curtains and bedspread, and a bargain at only $20!! All up approx $150 to do both kids' curtains. Much better than the $500 per window the curtain shop quoted for them!
