About two weeks ago we went for our colour selection. Before the appointment, we knew exactly what we wanted as we've been looking at display homes for about a year and we knew what we liked. However, we came out of that appointment having changed half our colours which we were set on when going in!! We did the typical and started second guessing ourselves, now I'm worried that I got swept up in the moment and have made the wrong decision. Here is my selections, apologies beforehand for this LONG post : External: Brick: Boral Tanami (the facade will be rendered, but we havent chosen the colour as yet). We thought that the bi-fold doors might look too dark with woodland grey, and silver looked more elegant and classy. So we chose silver for the bi-folds, which meant the windows all changed accordingly. I think one of my main worries is that the colour scheme of the kitchen does not match the ensuite and bathroom. I was going to run brown to the ensuite and bathroom also, but then we really wanted the black and white tiles, and thought the brown might be abit out of place? Ok everyone, hit me with your comments... Thanks in advance Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: My colours selections, please advise! With Pictures!! 2Feb 26, 2009 8:36 am Nice choices! A few things
1. Front door choice - are you having clear or obscured/frosted glass? If clear - you might have some security concerns with people looking in your front door. 2. Ensuite & bathroom - you'll see every speck of dust with a dark top (Burnished Wood) - I'd use the same colours but in reverse - same as your Powder room. After 4 years - we're in! Re: My colours selections, please advise! With Pictures!! 3Feb 26, 2009 8:45 am I like all your interior choices, but then I like greys. I love the Alaskan laminate, saw it in a house recently and it looked fantastic.
I like the dark benchtops. The only thing I'm not into is the silver windows. But that's just a personal opinion thing, I don't think it really goes with your other externals. I'd put a real contrast with Tanami like Black, Woodland Grey or White. Something that pops. But that's just me. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Before I look at your selections I need to ask a question…. WHY….after a year of knowing what you wanted…..did you change half of your selection at your colour appointment???? I’m confused, how does that happen? Did you get talked out of what you had chosen? Or do you get no advice at all while doing your colours? I’m very disappointed every time I read comments like this, and I feel very sorry for everyone this happens to……and angry. Now, after I’ve made some attempt at looking I have come to work for a reason, I’ll look at your selections. Stonecutter, we are getting translucent glass for the front doors. I also find it strange that people have clear glass. You cant pretend you're not home when someone comes to visit you! Jo, yea I know what you mean. We were actually going to have woodland grey for all alum windows and doors. But then we thought that the grey would be too dark looking for our bi-folds. We are getting the bifold unit in the back family/meals area, to really open up the place. And we thought the dark colour just didnt look as good as the silver. We saw the display home with the silver and it looked really good. So we decide to go for it. I think white would be too white for me, if you know what i mean. Michelle, I know it sounds strange that we changed our colour selections, but we didnt change all of it. One of the reason for the colour change was the bi-fold doors. We had our heart set on timber bifold doors. We wanted to upgrade to the bifold corner unit because it really opens up the house. But when we got to colour selections, we were told that the supplier whom they get the doors from dont do timber bi-fold units, they only do it in alum. We decided that we really wanted the unit so opted for the alum doors instead. That's when we changed the windows from woodland grey to metro silver. With colour scheme, we were going to have chocolate and white in the bathroom. But when we got to the selections, we saw the black tiles and it seemed to 'pop' alot more than the chocolate tiles. And because our tiles were black and white, we had to change the cabinets and benchtops from choco/white to black/white. Our colour consultant was no help what so ever. She asked us what we wanted and we asked for her opinions and she just said that they are both nice, really up to us!! I really liked the black/white theme in the wet areas so we just decided to stick with it. Now i'm worried that the colours we've chosen might not all match, and heaven forbid CLASH!! To me the only thing doesn't fit in is the splashback. I think if you just changed that to your wall colour then everything still works. Also, personally I prefer the ensuite and main bathroom to have the same finishes so I would swap as stonecutter said. Re: My colours selections, please advise! I was thinking that a white splashback would look to plain. I thought if i go for a light mocca colour, it would match the overhead cupboards and timber flooring. The main bathroom and ensuite will have the same colour theme. It's the powder room that has a different benchtop as there are no cupboards in there. Also, i thought i would go for the lighter top as the vanity splashback will be black. I'm still undecide about whether I will reverse the colours around in the bathroom/ensuite. I will have to speak to my partner and see what he says. thanks. Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: My colours selections, please advise! I did the same as you a bit, I changed all my tiles months after making my initial selections! But I am so happy I did. I think you learn a bit more about what's out there as you get further and further into the building process and learn more about yourself - what you like and don't like - as you go, so your initial selections don't often match the 'you' at the end of the journey. Does that explain it a bit more for you Mich? "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. I had a friend who changed her tile selections about 4 times, her DH was going insane, she was already insane lol. Re: My colours selections, please advise! With Pictures!! 10Feb 26, 2009 1:15 pm I need to look at all this on my computer at home, this one at work is shocking!
You are going to be very surprised how well your doors & windows will go with the Woodland Grey.... I'm not sure about the splashback, but again I need to wait till I get home. But....all looks really good, very nice. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: My colours selections, please advise! With Pictures!! 11Feb 26, 2009 1:34 pm Thanks Donuts, for the assurance. I have seen the silver bi-folds in display houses and they look awesome, but I'm just worried that it might clash too much with my bricks. Still thinking, but my partner really likes the colour. Yep, i think your explanation of the change of colour selection is spot on. The more I learn about building, the more I think about clashes etc, and different colour themes.
Thanks SuH. I wonder how the colours look on everyone's screen? Can you let me know why you're abit iffy about it? Is the colour too brown, too light, too strange? Thanks Mish for looking into it for me! Whenever your free, of course! When you said that I would be surprise at how well my doors/window will go with the woodland grey, do you mean that the metro silver with go with the woodland grey, or are you suggesting that i change them to woodland grey? Sorry, I'm abit slow! Thanks girls, you've all been awesome, its good to get another person's opinion and perspective on things. Clay pipe Metallic finish, is a very soft Latté colour, I think it will work well with the dark Nocturne oak. The metallic look will be a nice touch. Yea I was abit surprised by the pink comment. I was sure that it didnt look pink. But then again, i have been told by friends that i can be abit colour blind Michelle, we are going for the metallic finish for the splash back without the starfire. Our colour consultant told us that since we are going for the metallic finish, it would cut out the green tinge. However, I've read on this forum that even tho you go metalic, you still need starfire? What's everyone's opinion? Anyway, I think even with a slight green tint, it will still work well.
