Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Feb 21, 2009 11:53 am Hi,
My girlfriend and I are trying to choose colours to paint our house before we get to pre-start so we know what tiles and other bits and pieces to choose. We don't want to do the entire living area one colour, but we aren't sure how to have different colours in different areas when there aren't really any physical divisions. I was up late last night reading trying to work out what to do, but I think the more I read the more lost I'm getting. Any help to get us heading in the right direction is appreciated, thanks! Re: Painting open plan living area, kitchen dining lounge games 2Feb 21, 2009 1:05 pm Justin, Do you have a plan you could post and explain which rooms you are talking about? Re: Painting open plan living area, kitchen dining lounge games 3Feb 21, 2009 1:29 pm Good idea, this is the only one I have, it's essentially the same except the ensuite will be where the study is and then a WIR where the ensuite is and the right hand wall of the living area will be moved in about a metre. As mentioned, it's the kitchen/family/dining/games area that we're most stuck with atm.

Good Luck K Re: Painting open plan living area, kitchen dining lounge games 5Feb 21, 2009 5:52 pm My thoughts are close to PK….I would do left hand side of the room (on the floor plan) one colour, then the window side a lighter version of the same colour.
What colours were you thinking of? Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Painting open plan living area, kitchen dining lounge games 6Feb 21, 2009 6:03 pm Thank you for your quick reply's.
We were looking at greens for the kitchen and browns for the living areas. But maybe the paint in the kitchen doesn't need to be greens. Maybe a darker brown on the kitchen and dining side and then a lighter brown on the window side, and some kind of combination of greens for the tiles and cupboards and bench tops in the kitchen. We have a pool table to go into the games room(green felt, dark brown wood), would you recommend painting the games room with the same colours as the rest of the living area? I'm sorry, my questions are leading to more questions as I try to imagine the kitchen I start to wonder what effect that will have on the other rooms and it starts to get overwhelming Re: Painting open plan living area, kitchen dining lounge games 7Feb 21, 2009 6:13 pm JustinH Thank you for your quick reply's. YES......thats good! We have a pool table to go into the games room(green felt, dark brown wood), would you recommend painting the games room with the same colours as the rest of the living area? Yes again, keep the colours flowing in the large room I'm sorry, my questions are leading to more questions as I try to imagine the kitchen I start to wonder what effect that will have on the other rooms and it starts to get overwhelming Use your greens as ascent colours, it will look really good! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Painting open plan living area, kitchen dining lounge games 8Feb 28, 2009 10:35 pm Ok, the colour choosing has really started. We went to the tile shop today and had a look at the tiles and laminates(laminex formica range) we have to choose from.
It was our first look, so we just chose a few colours we thought might go well, so here they are. We have decided to get Essa stone bench tops in the kitchen, we haven't seen any colours in person yet, but from the Essa stone website we like the green tea colour: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We think the dark brown cupboards in the back look good with the green tea so we picked this colour for the bottom cupboards and pantry(nocturn oak): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And we like the way the top cupboards are a lighter colour than the bottom cupboards in the attached pic, so we chose these three colours(coral flint finish, clamshell and peruvian clay respectively) and are leaning more towards the clamshell at this stage: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And we're wanting to get a stronger green for splash backs(I'm fairly sure our splashbacks are just one tile high, not the full wall), they didn't really have anything we liked at the shop we were at, we are hoping one of their other stores has a better/different range. Please share any thoughts, ideas and opinions because we're new to this, we'd much rather be told that we've picked horrible colours than find out once the house is built Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Painting open plan living area, kitchen dining lounge games 9Mar 02, 2009 12:28 pm I modelled our kitchen in some 3d visualisation software and used the actual laminex and essa stone swatches, and it looks horrible.
We're thinking the reason the green tea essa stone looks good with the dark cupboards in the other photo is just because everything is dark and the bench is the accent. As mentioned, the living area and therfore kitchen walls are going to be browns, so we were planning to continue that but use green as an accent. If we have the green tea colour bench, it's not really different enough on it's own to be an accent, so we were thinking of having a stronger green for tile splash backs. Would we be better off having a white/brown bench with green tiles or some kind of brown tiles with the tea green bench? Here is the model of the kitchen with the first attempt of colours, I haven't really sorted the lighting out properly, but it gives you an idea. I’ll try and get to your post tonight; I’ve had a lot to do in the last few days. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Painting open plan living area, kitchen dining lounge games 11Mar 02, 2009 5:19 pm Hi Justin….in your mock-up, (very good by the way) you have the green tiles running very low as a splash back next the stove top, is this what you intend on doing?
I have to say I like the depth of the Peruvian Clay, I’ve pulled the colours out of my Laminex folder and the Nocturn Oak & Peruvian Clay are stunning together. Combined with a green tile, you are on a winner! Love the Green Tea Essa Stone as well. This will be a lovely combination.
