Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Feb 03, 2009 9:22 pm Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie to your forum but have been lurking in the background for awhile now. We are in the process of giving our unit a quick (cheap) facelift. We've painted the walls and now hubby has instructed me to go and pick some lino tomorrow for the kitchen floor. Honestly, these men just don't understand that it can take weeks to pick a colour, one day's notice is just not sufficient! Anyway I am hoping that someone here may be able to give me an idea on what colour I should choose. I am not sure whether I should attempt to match it to the bathroom and laundry (pics of bathroom tiles attached) or whether it is best to match to the kitchen benches or wall colour. I definitely want something neutral and I am not overly bothered if it doesn't match the bathroom - just whatever goes best is all I'm after. It gets alot of light (these photos were taken at night) and I will be hanging a sheer curtain at some stage too which I will be asking colour advise on! Any help would be greatly appreciated Cheers Debbie Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Help me choose lino colour! 2Feb 04, 2009 8:35 am Why not a faux timber look?
We installed vinyl in our rental last year in a rich timber look and it went really well with our kitchen & dining area. Sorry this is the only photo I have and we currently have a tenant in there. Thanks for your reply. That looks fantastic and I love it. Is it lino though or is it a laminate/floating floor? We installed a simlar coloured floating floor at our other house and it looked beautiful to start with but is all warped and ugly now due to water. Hubby says "lino only" from now on for that reason! If it is lino you have, could you let me know where you got it from? Cheers Debbie Re: Help me choose lino colour! 4Feb 04, 2009 9:31 am No it is definitely lino (or I think the shop called it vinyl). We bought it from a small independant retailer in Newcastle.
Just have a look in your phone book for smaller retailers - maybe even people who deal in end of rolls / offcuts etc - that is who the guys we dealt with were. They have done three of our rentals now as they were all small properties so we didn't need a real lot. From memory the vinyl and laying came to less then $1000 - cash prices. Room was around 4m by 9ish metres - plus they had to lay down ply first as the old vinyl ruined the floor underneath. This was to make the floor completely level for the layers. So with our kitchen do you think the dark wood effect would match everything ok? I know it will match the paint colour, but I'm not sure about the black bench and white cupboards.
Hubby is going to lay it himself so he's just asked me to measure up and go buy it so hopefully they will let us do that. Re: Help me choose lino colour! 6Feb 04, 2009 9:44 am I personally think that timber looks great with any colours. We had a lighter beech colour floating floor in our previous home - cupboards were a light mottled yellow and navy benchtops (sounds gross but it was really lovely and fresh) whilst this time the vinyl was dark as was the cupboards with a lighter benchtop. Both scenarios looked great - both houses had real estate agents comment on the kitchens (and no it wasn't to get our business because we even mentioned changing the kitchen if they recommended it!!)
If you go with a smaller retailer they will not have any issue with your husband laying the vinyl. We struck gold with the layers that our retailer recommended to us - as DH had grown up with one of them so were able to negotiate a really great price. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Help me choose lino colour! 7Feb 04, 2009 9:46 am Hi Debbie…..its vinyl, and it comes in many colours, you can even get a light timber look, which might be better for your unit, it looks a little on the dark side.
The vinyls come in 4mt wide. I’m going to use a vinyl for my little place, ripping up carpet in lounge, hall and office, plus kitchen later down the track. There are different grades and thicknesses. I absolutely love that dark rich wood colour, and would love to use it if I could get away with it.
The photos I took were really bad quality, it was taken late last night and also my pc was playing up so I had to cut the photo quality to enable me to upload. In reality, the kitchen seems to get quite alot of light - there is a reasonably big window in the middle of the room and I don't need lights on until the sun goes down. The paint colour is quite dark though so maybe that's what you mean. Do you think I could get away with that dark wood or would you still recommend a lighter colour? Re: Help me choose lino colour! 10Feb 04, 2009 10:38 am Debbie, you are who I think you are???
I have seen more photos? Go and get a sample book of vinyls, it will have all the colours in it, then you will be able to see which one works best. Do it today if you can? I'm about to head off in 15mins or so, so will get the samples as you suggest. I didn't even realise you could get samples - I am so clueless! Thanks again for all your help Re: Help me choose lino colour! 12Feb 04, 2009 1:21 pm On the Pegulan website there were a few timber looks in all shades of darkness

Anthony Firstly, wow you have put a lot of work into your list of questions! Great job and they are mostly valid questions that a builder should be able to answer. As… 14 10673 Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7079 Thank you @. Tried to play with the facade models but the exact colour is not matching up. 2 3212 |
