Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jan 19, 2009 6:13 pm Hi Michelle and others, I am wondering what sort of a result you get when you paint your walls in two different strengths/tones. For example, paint a lighter colour below the picture rail/frieze and a darker one above. I think it looks nice if done right but what are the effects on the eye of doing it one way or the other? e.g. Dark colour above or light colour above. Which way around makes the room appear bigger or smaller?
Re: Effects of two tone colour scheme 2Jan 19, 2009 7:56 pm Hi Colsy, I am not Michelle but I think this is how it goes...
If you paint the top part of the wall darker than the bottom part, it can close the room in a little bit. But if you have high ceilings then it doesn't matter and you can do what you want. hope that helps Re: Effects of two tone colour scheme 3Jan 19, 2009 9:13 pm Thanks donuts, thats what I was thinking. I guess if you have very high ceilings then a darker colour above will make it feel a bit cosier?
I want to try and have a cosy feeling but also keep the feeling of space. We had 12ft ceilings in the last house and painted below the picture rail off-white and light sage green above. As long as it is a fairly large room or has high ceilings it should be able to take it . Re: Effects of two tone colour scheme 6Jan 20, 2009 6:25 am OK, I will admit there are some other motives here. Above the picture rail looks like it was recently painted and is not a bad colour. Perhaps similar to Dulux Studio Cream...or a bit lighter. The bottom half has got some crazy wallpaper going on so that has to go and thus we have to paint there. But I can cut the job time in half if I dont have to paint the top.
Just need to work out the bottom colour. The furniture in the pic is from the previous occupiers, and the floor boards are about to be sanded and polished. Are you keeping the art deco theme? Not really. We wont be going modern though. Trying to find a nice balance between traditional and practicality. Re: Effects of two tone colour scheme 10Jan 21, 2009 7:26 am Aso wondering what coulr to paint the picture rail....same colour as the top or same as the bottom....or a different colour entirely? Re: Effects of two tone colour scheme 11Jan 21, 2009 10:03 pm Hey Colsy.
I had some similar issues with picture rails and two toned colours. You have completely different walls to me though.. After much consideration, we went with the same above and below and put a lighter colour on the picture rail. Even after just doing two rooms we can really notice the difference in where our eyes travel too. Before when it was two tone, we jsut noticed the darker bottom bit of the wall... NOW our eyes seem to automatically seek out the picture rail. I'm not entirely sure if this is a good thing or not Also, the one colour has made the walls look even longer and the whole space looks a lot more open (what we were going for).
