Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jan 04, 2009 3:51 pm We have picture rails throughout our whole house. We decided to leave them in. Originally we were going to paint the main walls a shade of white with the picture rails a whiter white ( ) with a bit of glossy sheen.
Now, I was actually thinking of painting the partition ABOVE the picture rail a slightly DARKER shade than the main panel below. I have seen it the opposite before (lighter as it goes to the ceiling..) but I don't really like it. I just wondered if there was a reason NOT to do it darker? Would it make the walls look like they were coming inward? I haven't seen it anywhere except retail stores where I think it looked really effective... but I figured there is probably some reason why i haven't seen it done residentially before. Picture one is of one of our walls so you can see what I mean about the picture rails... Don't mind our tenants tricked out computer gear Picture two is the example of it getting lighter. You will make your celings look lower - retails stores use it to hide services and ducts which are attached to the ceiling. Re: Paint colours for interior with picture rails throughout 3Jan 04, 2009 4:08 pm Ed’s right, by painting the wall space above the picture rail you will lower your ceiling height…..in appearance.
BUT….you have lovely high ceilings! How high are they? I think you can get away with it. If you had normal 8ft ceilings I would say don’t do it. I don’t see a problem here, just don’t go TOO dark. I'm not sure on feet, but they are 2.8 metres tall. Oh pooh. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm not sure the white with whiter picture rails will look good. The walls are currently white and PINK throughout the whole house. It doesn't look too bad in photos but in person it is just god-awful. Re: Paint colours for interior with picture rails throughout 5Jan 04, 2009 4:23 pm I think you may have missed what I was saying…..go ahead and paint them a darker colour. It looks stunning. She has ecru on the botton and in gloss on the picture rail and then a colour called Barn Floor (DULUX) on the top and then Ecru (not sure what strength) on the ceiling. Re: Paint colours for interior with picture rails throughout 7Jan 04, 2009 4:36 pm By the way - the friend I was talking about had a colour consultant choose those colours. So it is definately ok to have darker on top.

Borg - I have no idea. Some form of ghastly dirty pink. In real life it is MUCH pinker. It must have been on special when the old owners were tarting it up for sale [/img] Re: Paint colours for interior with picture rails throughout 14Jan 04, 2009 6:07 pm karol Michelle - 99% some form of... you guessed it... white Then yes paint it white. I think Borg is talking about the green in the second photo? They have painted the ceiling the same colour as the top section. You dont see many ceilings with colour, is there a reason for this other than it makes it appear lower? Re: Paint colours for interior with picture rails throughout 19Jan 09, 2009 5:29 pm To those asking about the colours in the renovated pics - no idea I'm sorry.
