Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jan 01, 2009 11:12 pm howdy all,
We are planning to do some painting now that we have completed renovating over the past few years. We are interested in painting the walls and skirting boards to complement our choice of furniture and floor coverings. We are thinking of something like a ligth brown or grey throughout the house with white skirting boards (same colour as the ceiling but in a high gloss (aquanamel)). We want to make the small house look bigger are hoping to sell sometime later this year to start building (so I guess that means lighter and more neutral) We put up two sample colours ("hogs bristle" and 1/2 strength "self destruct" : both from Dulux) and noticed straight away the two look different depending on what originial colour it was painted over. We like"the 1/2 strength however we are concerned that it wont be light enough...A light grey was an alternative (ie white duck half/quarter etc) however as we have earth coloured kitchen / furniture [..i think...] etc we thought we should go for a shade of brown,, Unfortunately, we cant make up our minds. Any opinions, suggestions or ideas ? oh yes, I promise to paint / replace the pantry louvred door too :-> Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Why are priates scary ? as for showing up different on each wall did you use undercoat before testing the samples? i think you'll need 2 coats of undercoat especially on those dark yellow walls. Re: new house colours... 3Jan 02, 2009 8:30 am Don’t paint anything on those yellow walls without undercoat first; you will never get a correct colour.
Your home is going to look so much lighter and brighter when you paint that yellow out, you will be surprised! (and need sunglasses!) I’ll have a look later at this for you. Do you think whisper white will be too stark against the darker coloured furniture ? We were leaning towards maybe a 1/2 strength higs bristle or similar. You cant see it in the photo but we have timber venetians in the windows, I guess whichever colour we go for needs to go with that as well. Definately will be doing 2 coats of undercoat on those nice yellow walls of ours. thanks for the advice ! Why are priates scary ? Because they yaargh.. Re: new house colours... 5Jan 04, 2009 10:01 pm i like the lighter of the two shades you painted samples of, but it is hard to say from here with so much yellow, can i suggest that u paint ur undercoat first, because that will be white anyway, then if u don't like the white undercoat, u can rule white out, then paint ur samples on because u will find that may change ur mind a bit.
We just painted our hallway and dining room warm neutral 1/2 but had to paint an undercoat first and the white was too stark and sterile for our space. but i would def suggest paintint ur undercoat and going from there Edited to add, where you have your tv, i would consider painting that wall a darker colour than the light one u painted, not neccessarilly heaps dark, but just a bit darker for a "feature". Sorry i'm prolly not making much sense. Re: new house colours... 6Jan 05, 2009 8:42 am hog's bristle is nice but i don't think it works in the kitchen.
i don't know if it's just the photos but the brown joinery looks to have a grey tone to it rather than a yellow tone so i think the yellow tone hog bristle wouldn't work as nicely as a more grey tone white... also considering the white tiles. so maybe whisper white in the kitchen (good to brighten the kitchen and make it feel bigger) and the warmer tone hog bristle in the living space. Re: new house colours... 7Jan 05, 2009 1:06 pm We've recently re-painted our house, originally our walls were painted in French Vanilla Ice-cream, which has quite a strong yellow undertone.
We did undercoat our walls as Michelle suggested to bring out the true colour before painting our house. We tried Hog Bristle in 1/2 strength, but unfortunately for us it had still had too much yellow for our liking. There were various other shades we tried one of which you might like was a paint called Sandy Day (1/2 strength) this showed more of a grey tone but not over bearing. Our house was finally painted in Moon River by Bristol (its mainly a earthy light brown tone). Another member on this forum suggested it and thank goodness they did Hope I havn't confused you with paint choices, good luck with your decision. Cheers, Mel Yes well there solution is to blame everyone else while I a 65yr old woman with major medical problems have to just continue to boil water and wash myself in a bucket… 2 16015 If you make sure all taps inside and out are turned off, what does the water meter show if you leave it for a while. 2 20235 13 6632 |
