Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Dec 31, 2008 9:37 am I'm in the process of trying to decide what colour to make curtains in my living area, it consists of two 275 wide window/sliding doors and one 239 wide full course window along the back wall and two 167 wide windows at either end and all 214 high..so all up about 9 m of windows. As I have said in an earlier thread, we are so far unpainted, but I plan to use a brown nuetral something like hogs bristle.. if I can convince hubby out of something greyer. The kitchen cabinets (in the middle of this large living space) are espresso colour and our furniture is mostly jarrah or similar colour wood, the carpet in the lounge is an Earth colour and I have a carpet in the area with a predominately rich maroon design..some green and brown in too. Basically very warm tones all over.
Ok so I know it would be easier to post a pic, I would but my computer has personal issues with my camera at present due to Dh expressing his creative side with my distro's. ..so I can't. But my question is, what colour curtains? And should i curtain the whole lot or do something different with the two end windows? I will be making them myself and it's the easiest budget thing to do on the windows that are exits. I need them to be washable and also insulative. I was heading toward a dark brown/ maroon but can't seem to find fabric dark enough, then I thought white to offset the colour on the walls but with two kids...not very practical. ( I swear when the kids grow up I am going to go buy white furnishings just because I can). I just can't see any other options. The only other nuetral I could think of would be a darker version of the paint colour. Would that work? I don't like green and I thought chocolate would be too much brown in such volume. They are going to be concealed tab top with the non- exit windows having a white softer layer set in muslin brackets, to let in light when needed. Oh and I'm going to set them up a little higher than the window top to "lift" the ceiling line. Does any of this make sense..? I'm working through it in my head as I write I think, I think I dreamt about it last night, too because I was up till 2am going through magazines looking for inspiration and working out how much fabric I would need. Any suggestions? Ta Re: Curtain colours (sorry a bit long) 2Dec 31, 2008 4:28 pm From what I understand you don't want roller blinds which is a shame because Designer Blinds have a great textured weave range that would look great with your selections - I've posted some pics in our curtain thread re: the curtains we selected from DB. There is also a new range out which has some type of silver thermal backing which is apparently heat and uv resistant.
In terms of fabric .... sky is the limit.. whats your budget??? Go to Warwick or another fabric store and pic what you like and can afford. It is personal taste. Also I'd keep them all the same if they are in one room, but thats me. I like textured fabrics as opposed to patterns. Check out the Concord range from Warwick ... the Celadon is a nice colour ... its a very pale sage green (I know you don't like green but this is so muted you might like it). If you have a lot of warm colours I'd go with a pale cooler colour ... IMO Re: Curtain colours (sorry a bit long) 3Jan 01, 2009 4:36 pm Hi Dragonfly
What colour are your couches? Apart from the jarrah furniture is there any other colours in furniture (like the seats of dining chairs)? Do you have any cushions or accessories that you want to use? Re: Curtain colours (sorry a bit long) 4Jan 01, 2009 7:35 pm Dragonfly, when you start dreaming of the curtains, it serious stuff!
Unfortunately, there are more colour choices in paint than in fabrics. I like the idea of the green curtains against something Like the Hog Bristle. I think that could look very slick. BUT, you will need to find the right green. Get a small board, and paint it up in the Hog Bristle – 2 coats! Carry that around with you while you are looking for fabric, this should help you out heaps. Even I carry my A4’s around with me when trying to tie colours together. I ended up with a boring brownish/grey neutral, but I like it because it 'll blend in and be flexible with future redecorating. Yes green would have worked very well, I had several other people mention same to me but I'm just not that keen on green. Think it stems back to people telling me I had to wear green because I have reddish hair...I rebel.. Quote: sky is the limit.. whats your budget??? Yes that is what scared me, the fabric I saw was starting at $20/m and that was my limit..trying to do it for around $1000. I did it for $1200 all up, including rods and brackets, rings and hooks. I’ve noticed also that the really great fabrics, just aren’t hard wearing and probably won’t go the distance.
