Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Nov 11, 2008 8:12 pm Hi all,
So after thinking about our external colour scheme for what seems like forever, we actually have to make a decision this week so we can try to get our building permit (we still haven't decided on a builder yet...but hey what the heck ) Our designer had originally had an idea of using a copper coloured material as part of the external cladding but DH and I could never get used to that idea...but what we have decided on so far is a bit different anyway. So this is our house...I know it's hard to get an idea of what it is like from these drawings, but I will do my best to try and explain what goes where. This is the original version, so where you see orange was meant to be copper. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Another view with no colour. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ OK so the Dune (bottom left) is our choice for the roof and gutters (council will not allow our original choice of shale grey, so I'm not sure if Dune will also be too light....next choice after Dune in Windspray). The rusted effect paint is to go on the western side wall (where it says 9mm compressed fibre cement sheet on the south western elevation) and maybe in a few other locations. The other material is to replace what is shown in the orange colour in the first image. The Autumn Red is our favorite, the colour in the second option is Facade in the colorbond metallic range which we would use as a mini-orb cladding. Autumn Red Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Facade (this looks totally different on my screen to the sample that I have) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ OK if you have made it this far, my question actually is... What colour should we use for the other bits...inside the carport and all the other external walls? Council have said that our colour scheme must be "muted subdued tones that blend with the natural environment" So any ideas....anyone? I'd be hesitant to bring in another colour, I think three is enough for a facade, but how about a double strength Dune? So the tones are the same but you get two different shades of the same colour?
We're hopefully doing a Dune roof too (but we also have the council rule that colorbond roof must not be light grey or silver so fingers crossed we'll get it through) and I'm thinking about half strength Dune render (need to try it out), just so I don't end up with too many colours. Re: Something a bit different? 7Nov 12, 2008 9:35 am Thanks Simone and Rachelle.
Hmmm, hadn't thought of that Rachelle, I'm thinking of getting some sample pots today, so I'll try the double strength Dune. I forgot to mention that we are also having some sandstone as well. The retaining walls to the east and west of the house will be sandstone, and on the elevations the designer has said that the outside wall of the carport and another wall on the south west elevation will be sandstone cladding. It could start to get really, really busy, if it isn't already Thought I might just make this easier to understand... Roof: Dune Gutters and down pipes: Dune Cladding: Autumn Red 'Hightlight': Rusted iron (by Haymes or Porters Paints) Render for carport and back walls: ??? Garage door: ??? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ What colour would people suggest for the garage door then? I was just thinking Dune, to keep it simple. I do like darker colours and greys and charcoals, but don't want this for our roof, so it limits what we can have on the walls, given the number of other colours already. Any other thoughts? Love them! If you like charcoals, the new colourbond Monument works really well with Dune.

I'll have to try to find a sample...our local hardware store haven't updated their colours , and DH wasn't too keen on the charcoal colours I came home with yesterday 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Something a bit different? 10Nov 12, 2008 11:42 am What a fantastic house! and I love your colours also. Just had a look at Monument and I like that as well. We were looking at charcoal colours for a garage door feature as most of our house is white-ish, and we have dune gutters too what a small world Re: Something a bit different? 11Nov 12, 2008 8:24 pm I love your house & the setting 'chelle
I'm no help for your render colour either, but I think if you are going Dune for the roof that would be good for the garage. Really good friends of ours just moved to Tassie , they love it though, so we'll have to plan a holiday there for next year... Re: Something a bit different? 12Nov 12, 2008 8:30 pm I would bring the Dune down and use that in the other areas.
It’s a great complementary colour and will work well! House looks great, can't wait to see it finished. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Something a bit different? 13Nov 12, 2008 9:17 pm Thanks everyone .
And thanks Michelle, I think that's what we're leaning towards...we really don't need to introduce another colour. OK so I have been playing on Photoshop all night, but it's really hard to get the colours looking right, and as for the rusted effect ...but here is what I was playing around with anyway. Dune walls and roof with dune garage door. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Dune walls and roof with Monument garage door Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I thought I'd try the monument on the door as the steel posts are in a similar colour. At one stage today, I was considering Monument on the gutters and down pipes, but I don't think the dark horizontal lines will work with the design. Another thing we need to decide on is how much of the rusted effect to use. I used quite a lot on the pics above but we can reduce this ...It will be cheaper than the Autumn red, but is it too much?? Argh! too many decisions BTW I did find a lovely paint today..almost the same colour as dune, but it is by a company called Murobond (Haymes supply it here). It's hard to describe it, but I guess it looks more like a wash or a Tuscan effect...so I think we might use something like this. We had originally wanted rammed earth (but it was too expensive) and this paint reminds me of that look. They also make a copper paint, so I got a sample pot of that too...we might try that instead of the rusted effect...I've got a bit of painting to do tomorrow. BTW I don't think DH wants a dark garage door, but will see what he thinks when he gets home (pub night tonight ) 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Something a bit different? 16Nov 13, 2008 7:46 am I like the Dune garage door one, its accents of the Monument works well Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Something a bit different? 17Nov 13, 2008 9:45 am Thanks Michelle,
I'm off to buy some of the rust paint today so we can paint some largish pieces of wood or something to get more of an idea what it will look like, and so we can also show council. Good question . I remember seeing the perfect staircase some where on here, but now I don't remember where...should have added it to favourites Anyway, I know that they are not the safest for kids, but I love open stair cases...I think they make an area look larger and airier. Oh and another safety no-no, timber...no carpet. My baby will be almost 5 1/2 by the time we move in so I'm hoping he will be sensible enough...he manages all the out side concrete steps we currently have, and they can be quite slippery.
