This is our new build living room, in the Adelaide hills. I have a few ideas but I’m in desperate need of some fresh perspectives and ideas to help me turn this from a nice blank canvas, to a ‘something special’ space. I’ve included images of our hall and kitchen to give more of an idea on the style of this build.
Not sure if we should add some wall molding/ wainscoting- bring some more texture and interest or if it would be ‘too much’. Obviously need artwork on the walls. Window furnishings..?
A large black ceiling fan is going up above the sofa area, and I’m yet to find a pendant for above the dining table (these dining chairs are all wrong, the were a freebee whilst we search for what we’re after).
A ‘forest’ of birch trees will be planted outside these windows, along with a lot of general landscaping to achieve lots of greenery outdoors.
Would so love and appreciate any thoughts!

It's already a lovely space, you've managed a classic style without being too cluttered and that creates a sense of calm. The birch forest will look amazing!  14 May 2024 92 Loyal Member Re: How would you make this room feel homey 4Jul 26, 2024 3:19 pm  lozz915I would agree with the other replies on adding more greenery, but some more wall art with some colour would brighten the place and I would paint one of the walls in the hallway and the wall behind the fire place as a feature colour you really enjoy. The styles now are often quite plain in colour and adding a few pops of it will make the space much welcoming. The kitchen is perfect the way it is so maybe utilise that dark blue by working with colours that look good against it. Yep, this is a very good point actually. I do like modern, and alot of white, which i went with for my build, but we did one feature wall of Pink in our ensuite, one blue in our main bathroom and one green in our laundry. We went white in kitchen for backsplash and walls, but we wanted our pink appliances to be big pops of colour and coloured picture frames etc... I wouldn’t worry about it being too much; just keep the design simple and it’ll look great. For artwork, mix in a few big pieces with some smaller ones to create a dynamic gallery wall. Window treatments like sheer curtains can be perfect for letting in light and adding a bit of softness. A pendant light with some style would be awesome above the dining table, especially to complement the black ceiling fan. And for the dining chairs, I’d suggest something that fits your overall style better once you find the right match. This was my first thought. Lovely home! Maybe one or two single vases on the walls would look nice. I'll attach the section of floorplan for this space with measurements so it makes more sense. But the room is is 5.3m wide, and 8.4m long on the shorter/ kitchen/ alfreco side, 10.35m long on the longer/ dining/ hallway side. In an ideal world, there are changes I would make now that we can feel the space, but it still feels great as is. (I'd go an extra 1-2m wider on the living area, and would make the kitchen area wider also. This will (a) save your neck; and (b) allow you to put a more in perspective (taller) art work over the fireplace. Maybe invest in a projector and retractable screen if the tv must go there.
