So obviously no-one with a family building houses here!
I ended up going with grey non-slip tiles with grey grout.
I also went with nylon carpet with an extra heavy duty rating. Then vinyl plank flooring that can be mopped.
They seemed to be the most practical choices from my research, just in case anyone comes back to this in the future. Material rather than colour seemed to be more important.
