Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jan 22, 2013 12:42 pm Hello hello Over the weekend our 1960s house will be entirely plastered, nice and fresh. That means come Monday, its time for us to paint the entire place. Eep. I've painted before, but not onto brand spanking new plaster - do I need to know anything special about preparing it for the best finish possible? I was just going to get some primer/sealer/undercoat all in one stuff and do a coat of that then get on with the top coats. One of the guys at work has just told me he uses "cheap plastic paint" as an undercoat (I'm guessing he means acrylic? I dunno, he's old ). How do you suggest I prep the plaster? Also, while I'm at it, I asked this a little while ago but didnt get a response: What are your thoughts on Britsh Paints Incolor paint? Apparently it doesnt need an undercoat because its got a built in primer? Is it trustworthy, will it look nice after two coats? http://www.britishpaints.com.au/Product ... -Low-Sheen Any help would be much appreciated - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. Re: Preparing new plaster 4Jan 23, 2013 10:52 am Surely when new homes are built there isnt an 8wk gap between plaster and paint? - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. Built in 2013. And painting then isn't done till right near the end... Re: Preparing new plaster 6Jan 23, 2013 11:16 am Hmm. Might give the plasterer a call! - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. I'm just going off what my local paint place told me when I bought the paint to do our new house. And yes, usually from the point that white set is put into a new house, there is roughly 8-10 weeks (sometime longer) before handover/painting time. Good to know it worked out for you though, good luck! Re: Preparing new plaster 11Jan 24, 2013 5:57 am About British Paints, I've never used it so I can't help you there. I'd still prime the new plaster joints...... I went and brought some today so we'll see how it goes! Also got some sealer/primer/undercoat so will give the house a quick once over with that first, just in case - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. Built in 2013. Our thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=67954 Re: Preparing new plaster 13Jan 25, 2013 10:04 am Primer! The previous owners of our house painted over unprimed plaster and the paint is literally peeling off the walls. Yuck! Today is under construction. Thank you for understanding. Our thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=67954 Re: Preparing new plaster 15Jun 11, 2014 12:15 pm Whilst Dulux sealer binder is made for the job, the paint shop assistant said it cant be tinted due to that interferring with its binding agent. There are other sealers on the market - acrylic sealers - that claim to be suitable for hard set plaster. Crommelin's Aquablock and Zinsser Bulls Eye 1.2.3 for example. Would these truly work ok sealing hard set plaster? Re: Preparing new plaster 16Jun 11, 2014 12:21 pm I would wait one year before applying final top coat. As the plaster dries there can be fine hairline cracks. Put on a sealer coast first then wait one year for the final decorative coats. Re: Preparing new plaster 17Jun 18, 2014 3:22 pm Waiting one year is not an option. Nor should it strictly be necessary as we'd see many unfinished houses. The question remains - are modern acrylic sealers, which claim to be suitable for hard set plaster, actually suitable? Some professionals say only oil based sealers will do, others say theres no issue. Hi, Have used the Dulux 1 step, oil base on my walls(white set), out of can it’s already a more thinner product than a final coat paint Also in water base Water or… 3 5564 yeah i couldnt picture it issue either, but i could clearly picture what they were doing wrong haha 2 5623 Our 6m high Cathedral ceiling has 0 insulation, just plaster, wrap and tiles as far as I can tell.
