Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Oct 19, 2019 10:39 am I have two 2 metre wide x 1.5m high colorbond gates that were installed by fencing contractor a couple of years ago. The gates are in closed position most of the time and one has a drop down pin to keep it in place when closed. Both gates get pinned when open. They were working great until the effects of wind came into play. Seems with the wind and the drop down pin in place that the top of the gate Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ with the pin down flexes back and forth and over time the gate stile now has some serious cracks and rust from the metal fatigue. The wind just needs to blow and the top of the gate flexes in and out. This causes the latch to come clear and the other gate swings open. I have propped the top of both sides of the gate with the drop down pin in it with tomato stakes to stop it flexing either way. Seems to work as a temporary measure but is a bugger when need to open it to drive in or out of the yard. 3 of the 4 stiles have now failed and the other one can see rust so looks like it won't be too far away from failing as well. I have ordered enough stiles to repair one gate but will need to order another set by the looks of it. Once the new stiles have been put on is there anything that can be done to the gate to stop it from flexing back and forth? I was thinking of some triangular shaped pieces into the corner at the junction of each stile and top and bottom rails but not sure. Has anyone done this before and know what size triangular shape works best? or can a diagonal brace on either side of the gate do the job? Should the gates be covered by some kind of a warranty? I should have followed up on this thread.
