Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jul 21, 2019 4:40 am Hi Everyone, I am looking for extensive renovation which includes raising celing heights from 2.4 mtrs to 2.7 mtrs for the entire house for 3 bedroom house with usual 2 living areas in South East Melbourne. Would appreciate if anyone can share there journey in similar extension project and can also highlight the cost involved in the entire project. Thanks heaps in advance. Harry Re: Raising Ceiling Height 2Jul 21, 2019 10:40 am Just to be sure, you understand that you could only raise the ceiling heights in the following ways: 1. The ceilings were previously lowered, and you are just reinstating what was already there. 2. You leave the height of the building the same, but completely redesign and rebuild the trusses so that the extra 30cm is added internally. This would only work if you have a trussed roof, and would result in an angle between the walls and ceiling wherever the pitch above necessitated. 3. Raise the height of the entire building by raising the roof, and adding that height to the existing walls. It would be easier if the entire roof was removed, but I suppose it could be possible to do with the existing roof in place. 2 and 3 would be quite massive undertakings, and cost a lot. I almost wonder, especially if 3 was the chosen option, if it might not be better just to build a new house? Re: Raising Ceiling Height 3Jul 21, 2019 12:36 pm That would be a huge amount of work for just 30cm of extra ceiling height. If you're going to bother you may as well go all out and go for 3m ceilings. Also bedrooms don't need high ceilings, it's not worth the cost for them. Re: Raising Ceiling Height 4Jul 22, 2019 8:18 am Thanks arcadelt for your response. I am not to sure whether there will be that much space in roof itself to be raise within existing outer tiles and still have space to crawl in for anything in future. I actually don't want to demolish the entire place as it still hold those good bones from 90s biult. But still hopeful to get someone experienced and recommended contractor to take roof tiles n put back new roof with colorbond. Its tricky and does involves huge costs but still keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks heaps Re: Raising Ceiling Height 5Jul 22, 2019 8:49 am amilelka That would be a huge amount of work for just 30cm of extra ceiling height. Hi Amilelka, I also have the same thoughts but heating and cooling another 300mm along with the construction cost will be another cost blow out as well. Will still consider when I will start conversation with draftsman Re: Raising Ceiling Height 6Sep 24, 2020 6:06 pm Harry3810 Hi Everyone, I am looking for extensive renovation which includes raising celing heights from 2.4 mtrs to 2.7 mtrs for the entire house for 3 bedroom house with usual 2 living areas in South East Melbourne. Harry Hey I exactly have the same interest. At this stage I only tend to vault the living/dining area and leave the rest of the house as it is. Let me know how your project goes please. Re: Raising Ceiling Height 7Sep 26, 2020 11:56 am simples way to achieve the result is to remove the whole roof and build up the walls and make a new roof but a huge expense for no extra living space.... instead of higher flat ceilings throughout the whole house consider a raked ceiling in the major rooms that leaves the same height along the edge of the wall with sloped ceiling in one or both directions ..check out scissor trusses, shed, coffered or tray ceiling for a detailed description of other ideas...even a small amount of extra height in the centre or along one side of the ceiling makes a great difference to the spacious feeling and/or consider roof windows Unless the room is for storage then it's non compliant BCA V2 2019 S3 P3.8 You have 2 options 1. The builder deconstructs the section and rebuilds as per plan /… 7 7330 ok thanks - yes was wondering if that should have been listed as Option Three! 2 6204 I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says.
