Hello, I am looking for a cost effective way to renovate door entry floor and 3 steps. As you can see the timbers varnish is worn down significantly, can this still be re-varnished? I was also considering laminate planks, but how would I do the nose of the stairs? Use something like aluminum nose trim?? Any suggestions? Thanks

You have real timber - do not cover it with laminate, which is a poor substitute. Hire a good floor finisher to sand and re-seal, and it will look great. Use a satin water-based polyurethane and it will have a very modern look (gloss if you want something more traditional).

arcadelt is right, you wouldn't put laminate over nice timber like that and being such a small area you could easily hand sand that a bit at the time no real need to hire a sander if you're looking to save money, start a step at the time by the foyer should be easy enough. Maybe a nice shiny metal angle capping for nosing the thinkness of the stairs when finished nice would look good something like this look.
There should be plenty of Youtube videos to give you a better idea.

Unfortunately the spot I need to photograph is covered by blow in insulation and an aircon duct. This is the best pic I could get. It is of the start of the point I want…
