Ok so I do have quite a few years building experience, but non on old Queenslanders. I now have a Queenslander and want to open up a back wall that has a window in it and replace it with a door. After stripping back the siding I'm looking at this old style framing and scratching my head. Studs of old hardwood that are 95 x 40mm and no header over the window. Single bottom plate of 1x and 1x lath strips. I thought I'd use a 100 x 50mm c channel I have spare as a header, but framing it in might end up with all sorts of scrape to flush it out to the studs, then framing with new pine studs doesnt make much sense since they are 90mm, plus im not sure i like the idea of mixing wood, but to frame it in the same hardwood would be expensive and a pain.
What do others do in renovations of old Queenslanders?
