Rendered brick window sills. What did you do?

Got talked into removing the sills and I hate the outcome. The style is Hamptons/Queenslander/Colonial and the modern sills do not look right. If you did the same what did you do to fix? Builder suggested boxing out and adding a sill and then we will paint white.
