Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Mar 03, 2017 10:44 pm Hi all, Just wanting some advice on a bathroom renovation in an apartment. It is a small bathroom with just toilet, vanity, and shower. I will be removing the shower frame but if I remove the base would it affect the waterproofing underneath? Same as the floor tiles in the bathroom, would it affect the waterproofing as it's an apartment? Another option I was told is that I could just leave the shower base and resurface it. I would appreciate any advice on what is the proper way to do it for an apartment and what I need to watch out for as I know with renovations many things can go wrong. Hi Kitty1 Is the apartment an older style one? I'm assuming it is given there is a shower base. Yes you can get them resurfaced, generally a bathtub resurface here is Sydney is between $400-$500 so I'd say a shower base may be slightly cheaper. But back to you question of should it be removed, there are a few factors you should consider. Like are you planning to remove any of the tiles in the bathroom and have them replaced? IE. Wall and floor tiles? If you were I'd remove the base all together and have new Waterproofing installed. If you are leaving tiles and just replacing fittings to give the bathroom a freshen up then I'd be more inclined to leave it. You could also remove it but there would be higher costs involved especially if new Waterproofing and tiling is required below after its removed. Do you have any pics you can share with us? Just makes it a bit easier to see what the best option may be. Would taking off the floor tiles in the bathroom affect the waterproofing? The demo trades said it wouldn't but wanting to make sure first. Certainly would. Any jackhammering up of floor tiles would mean new Waterproofing would be required. If the old waterproofing membrane is under the screed bed and they can remove the tiles without removing the sand and cement screed below, then you may be ok. That said it's usually hard to do that. Looks like your tray could come out, but there may be no fall in the screed bed below. In my opinion it would be best to speak with a tiler to get there option. Either way I'd budget for new Waterproofing as it's one of the most critical things to get right in a bathroom. Good luck. The tile stripper trades said they normally just remove the tiles and shower base leaving the cement floor which they would sand down to ready for tilers to tile over again. I was hoping then to tile the entire bathroom floor and use the tiles as a shower base making it look more up to date. I hope that is all possible. Only issue would be if they originally waterproofed ontop of the screed which they can sometimes do.
