Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 May 24, 2016 2:43 pm Hi All, Just wondering what people have done with some wall renovation experience. I’ve bought a federation house in Sydney’s Inner West – 1890-1910 era. I understand that the houses of the day were built to what was available at the time, so sandstone type foundations and lime mortars are par for course. At the moment, I’m in the process of stripping the walls back to the bare brick, and realised that the mortar isn’t good in most of the construction. With some parts needing to be rebuilt. I have a bricklayer doing the work at the moment – who I’m happy with. The brickie has suggested that we use bondcrete to render the walls, I understand boncrete has an adhesive property. Has anyone used bondcrete to render walls (walls will be gyprocked after), not only to get a smooth finish, but to also help hold the mortar in place ? The mortar is very loose and appears to be made up of a higher than usual sand mix. Open to alternative suggestions and work arounds. I basically want some piece of mind with the walls being secure and safe – they currently aren’t threatening, or look to be falling down, but I’d like piece of mind that the walls have been repaired properly – and won’t give me an issue for 10 years at least. Thanks Hi Andymac666 Welcome to the forum To be honest covering bad brickwork in bondcrete & then plasterboard, is a cheap and possibly dangerous fix, it also adds nothing to increase the structural integrity of the wall..How bad are the walls photos would help?
