Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Apr 20, 2016 1:31 am Hi guys! I could really use your help! My partner and I have purchased a lovely 2x1 which we knew would need to be renovated to add 1 x bedroom and 1 x bathroom to make it our forever home. The house has an add on backroom which we will be knocking down and rebuilding. This open plan room will become the kitchen, dining and living. This we are agreed on 100% However we are stuck on how to add the extra bathroom and bedroom. One of the things I absolutely hate is how dark our house is (because of the added on back room blocking out the dining, kitchen and 1 bedroom window) and one thing my partner hates is how much I leave the lights on so I want to fix both problems. The issue is he doesn't seem to care about windows or how the house flows or how we will be utilizing the space we have (its not the biggest house) He thinks more from a what is easier and cheaper point of view. The design I like (turning old lounge and dining room into the 2 new rooms) which gives us the biggest master and bathroom has the bathroom in the middle of the house -so no windows. But this is the one spot where that doesn't bother me. However my partner is worried about burst pipes and maintenance down the road. Our current kitchen is in the middle of the house so I'm guessing doing stuff like that is not a huge issue with builders? The only issue I could think of is making sure we put enough ventilation in. My partners idea was to essentially have a random space in front of the window-a built in small bathroom in the corner of the room and then the bed tucked in the old dining area (no natural light or windows) which I am dead set against as I don't think it flows, and also we end up with a lot of constricted space that isn't really useful. Here is the original design-the big area at the back is the room we will rebuild-but from the lounge wall not the carport. This means the 2nd bedroom would comfortably fit a double-The office would be quite small!!! (just need to make sure we have ventilation) Where the kitchen used to be opposite I would put a study nook. Also means we can expand our current en-suite and put more storage in the old laundry Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Design 3: Cut lounge in half and add walk through pantry with laundry as well. Remove wall so dining room joins with the new living area and becomes smaller games. Add bathroom where old laundry used to be. Only thing I don't like about this ia a)not sure our house is big enough to warrant a walk through pantry and B) no longer 2 backyard accesses as we lose the side door with the new bathroom. Our house does make good use of the space it has atm except for the kitchen (a little small, no bench space) and the laundry (really big!) Please help with any ideas and thoughts-So tired of arguing over our ideas! Thanks in Advance Erin 2 6423 I would say both styles you have pictured are steel. The lower chord of the first pic would be a massive lump if made using timber considering the size of the rafters.
