Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Mar 01, 2016 11:03 am Hi all I am building a small deck at the front of the house. The deck is 2.4m x 1.9 m. out of 2.4 meter, 1.8 meter is on concrete. The rest will be on the ground. I dug three holes, pour concrete and laid a 200x70 H4 treated pine on top them as the base. Then I put 3 bolts through the timber to the concrete to stabilize. I laid another small piece of 200x70 H4 treated pine on the ground without any concrete. Please find attached photos. can i please get some advise if it's okay or if I need to redo anything??? I really like to get this right before laying the decking boards. http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah209/Tanjim_Hossain/IMG_1444_zps2lzeeyfb.jpg http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah209/Tanjim_Hossain/IMG_1443_zps5d2amrqd.jpg http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah209/Tanjim_Hossain/IMG_1442_zpsz6cmxeso.jpg Re: Deck footing: Assistance required 2Mar 01, 2016 12:15 pm Hi Tanjim I really want to help you out here, this may offend you but please know im trying to help. You obviously care about the job and are willing to take direction from others. It appears your decking is going to run outwards away from the camera in the 2nd and 3rd photos right? I dont see any joists in these photos, I assume they are yet to be laid? Those bearers must be removed and flipped onto their sides so that they are standing upright tall, not flat. In the flat configuration they do not have the lineal rigidity to support the weight of people standing on top of the deck and will bow very quickly. If that will make it too high, then you would be better off cutting down (along the length of the pine) the portion which is on the concrete to the right hight, and having the overshoot full depth. The best way to fix them is to use treated pine square drive screws through the side of the bearers at about a 30 degree angle into those pieces of off cuts you have use to get the level. Also, try to avoid doubling up of bearers like you have near the wall, this will be strikingly obvious through the gaps in the decking. Re: Deck footing: Assistance required 3Mar 01, 2016 2:02 pm hi rebuilder86, I am not offended at all. Thank you for the advise. The deck is running outwards in the 2nd and 3rd photo. The is not enough height to add bearer and joist. Height has been a issue. I only had 70mm clearance from the concrete to the house floor level, hence I laid them flat. Underneath, I added composite decking pieces (the black thing in the picture) every 400mm under the bearers/ joist. Will it be easier if I pour some more concrete or add another H4 timber under the joists? What do you think about: "I dug three holes, pour concrete and laid a 200x70 H4 treated pine on top them as the base. Then I put 3 bolts through the timber to the concrete to stabilize. I laid another small piece of 200x70 H4 treated pine on the ground without any concrete." Will this be okay. Cheers. Re: Deck footing: Assistance required 4Mar 01, 2016 9:06 pm Hi Tanjim, Looks like you have gone to a lot of trouble there with still the issue of the base rotting out in time h4 or not. With that small an area, did you consider putting down a concrete slab then fixing battens to it,preferably light gauge gav.top hat section, then screw the decking to them, last a lot longer and easier to get flat. The decking can only span about 450mm along the length of the boards,in other words the battens need to be 450 apart. good luck. I agree with oldchippy, something along these lines would be a much better solution. Perhaps just carry on but be aware of the issue of rot in the future. Re: Deck footing: Assistance required 7Mar 04, 2016 4:37 pm If you are going to carry on with the same method,do yourself a favor and at least give those joists/battens a good coat of some sort of membrane paint.A lot of flat area of water will be trapped under the decking without a chance to dry out.Fair enough, the big pieces of 200x70 are supposed to be treated to H4,inground use,but what about the cut ends, did you retreat those? The joists/battens are only lightly treated, and for above ground use,and will deteriate quickly in the situation they are in. $50 spent on paint now will double the life of the joists.
