Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Feb 04, 2016 9:08 am Hi All First time visitor here and after some opinions on what to do with stone on the front of the house. I've painted the walls shale grey. The gutters, fascia, sills and barge boards are windspray. Some friends have suggested painting the stone the same shale grey. What do you think? I don't think the stone was too bad when the house was cream but it doesn't work with the grey. I should point out that the reason for the change of colour was because we've just finished a new extension at the rear of the house which was painted the same colour and looks fantastic, so I wanted the rest of the house to match. (Extension was weatherboard). I still think changing the stone and front door colour will make a big difference. Any thoughts on that anyone? Re: paint external stone 3Feb 05, 2016 7:28 am Personally I think the grey is fine. Hiding the stone will be your biggest challenge but simply painting it will look cheap to me even though that is the easiest thing to do. Is the stone flush with the rest of the wall or does it sit proud of the existing wall ? Whatever it is, I'd render it in the same finish as the rest of the wall then paint it the same grey colour . A contrasting darker grey for the door would suit that wall well even something as dark as a charcoal colour or match what you have painted the brick sills. Shame you have a 70's style flyscreen there though. Stewie Re: paint external stone 4Feb 05, 2016 8:13 am Thanks Stewie D Yes I am hesitant about painting over the stone. It could be rendered as it is flush or only slightly proud. I may try washing and sealing it first. And yes, the door will be same darker grey as the sills – and the damn flyscreen needs to go also! The entire house and garage had cream and mission brown and after doing the new extension, I couldn't let the rest sit. If you check the link again you'll notice a new pic of the back of the house and you'll see what I mean. Pity I couldn't rotate the house 180 on its axis! Re: paint external stone 5Feb 05, 2016 4:01 pm The rear looks good and you will definitely get a lot of use out of it. It is what it is and without spending big bucks to change the front it will still be a modest but updated suburban bungalow. Spending a bit on the landscaping at the front will probably help the kerb appeal too. Stewie Re my second point – yes exactly.
