Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Dec 01, 2015 4:26 pm Hi I couldn't see if this topic has been covered before but whatis everyone's thoughts on painting the exterior brick on a early 80s low set home. The brick at the moment is a yellow cream colour and I wanted to avoid rendering. Any thoughts suggestions ideas would be great. Cheers Re: Painting exterior brick in brisbane 2Dec 03, 2015 9:19 pm I've seen a lot of painted brick homes here in Adelaide. Looks fine to me. We have a 1950s home made of cement bricks. it was then rendered with random 'brick lines' gouged in whilst wet, then painted. Looks fine. If you are very careful in picking a harmonious or complimentary classic colour scheme for bricks, window sill ledges and timber work, I reckon you'll be happy. Best to choose a colour scheme you've seen that you know will look good. Can always paint over. Do some research first about taking the paint off ... Just in case you decide to take off in say 15 years if ou get sick of (if ou're still there)! By that time 80s will prob be fashionable again Re: Painting exterior brick in brisbane 3Dec 04, 2015 4:26 am Can you post a pic? I wouldn't recommend it unless the brick colour is a big issue (I was expecting you to say you had dark depressing brown bricks, in which case it would make sense). Once you paint brick, it goes from something which needs no maintenance to something which does need maintenance periodically down the road. Just wondering but why do you want to paint over a light coloured brick? and to what colour? Re: Painting exterior brick in brisbane 6Dec 05, 2015 3:39 pm You could have a lot of fun with that Chris ... The two vertical columns and horizontal planks at the front. I LIKE this question! My mum was fantastically creative and had the knack of making 'silk purses out os sows ears'. She'd see a solution to freshen up that facade and make it look great. (Gosh I miss her!) It's amazing what a creative person can see and achieve. You do not need to spend a lot of money. Why not Google painted bricks Australia to find examples? Dulux and Taubmans have colour consultants that can help you to put together a scheme for your house that you will like. If you're not a visualiser or creative, you might end up with something that doesn't look good, so worth getting support from someone who can pull it off for you. Give the bricks a good once over with a pressure cleaner and paint the trims/fascia/gable nice modern colours. You're going to need to clean the bricks with a pressure cleaner and maybe a scrub too if you're going to paint them, otherwise the paint will not adhere well. So give them a good clean up, paint the trims and see how you like it. If you still think you want to paint the bricks, knock yourself out!
