Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Sep 05, 2015 5:21 am Hi - we have cypress pine floorboards in our home and are looking to rip up the carpet and polish them. My question is, should we go the shiny polished look or a matte finish? I have heard pros and cons for each - showing more dust or scratches - and that you can "touch up" matte floorboards. Just looking for advice/experience in this area My build - viewforum.php?f=53 Re: Original Floorboards - polished or matte? 2Sep 05, 2015 2:51 pm We have cyprus pine floorboards. Definitely go with matt finish. Scratches aren't so obvious and neither is the dust. Our floors had been stained a dark reddish/ brown colour by the previous owner. Cyprus pine can become yellow/ orange in colour in time, the polyurethanes can cause this. As part of our reno's we sanded our floors (to costly to replace) and applied a coat of limewash and then a waterbased sealer. This is suppose to stop that yellowing effect and keep them more 'natural' looking. Just depends on the finish you want. Good luck. Re: Original Floorboards - polished or matte? 3Sep 08, 2015 9:32 am Polished floorboards may tend to look dirty as dust and dirt will be more visible on them. They also will scratch easily and may need repolishing after some time. However, it makes the floor look brighter compared to matte finished floorboards. Matte finished floorboards will look quite close to untreated wood. They look less finished but will require less care. I would prefer the polished floorboards because they will make the place look more beautiful. However, it’s up to you as it’s a personal preference. It depends on what you are looking for. Re: Original Floorboards - polished or matte? 4Sep 12, 2015 10:56 pm We have brushbox hardwood floors. Had them sanded and coated with gloss polyurethane about 18 months ago. We really don't like the finish and we are about to get them sanded back to go with a matt/satin water based finish. The water based finish brings out the natural tones and variations in the timber and looks a lot nicer than the "reddish" colour that the polyurethane looks. The gloss polyurethane shows up every imperfection and crack (the boards are 50 years old so there are plenty) and also shows up every scratch. Gloss, polished and shiny surfaces show up too many finger/foot prints. No. It's not original.
