Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Aug 19, 2015 6:15 pm I am planning to do a ground floor extension and internal reno/reconfiguration. The house needs to be rewired and the switchboard upgraded. By way of the reno, a good number of power points will become redundant and/or need to be moved, but I haven't even reached the drafting stage so I don't know where they'll go. Should I have both the rewiring and switchboard done now or wait until after the extension and do it all? Maybe it's better to just get the board done now and rewiring of the old part of the house after the extension. What do you think? TIA ETA: I will need to replace existing power points to doubles as well as all of the above so I'm looking for the most cost-effective and least disruptive approach. Re: When to do rewiring? Advice wanted 2Aug 20, 2015 8:49 am I'd be looking to do the work when the renos are underway. Then there is plenty of chance to work with open walls/ceilings, patch existing walls without calling a tradie back etc. Get it all planned out then ask a sparky for their ideas. Re: When to do rewiring? Advice wanted 3Aug 20, 2015 9:51 am If I were you, I would do the rewiring during renovation. This is because it’ll be easier to run the wires around. However, to be on the safe side, I would advise you to get a qualified electrician to do the job. This is because an electrician will be able to make sure your wiring is done correctly and abides by safety standards.
Re: When to do rewiring? Advice wanted 4Aug 20, 2015 12:41 pm Thanks for your replies. It makes perfect sense to do it at the same time as the extension. Guess it's time to find a good draftie now. Re: When to do rewiring? Advice wanted 5Aug 24, 2015 9:38 am You're best off doing the upgrades from the start. Problems arise when connecting new electrical work into an existing installation because chances are the existing installation doesn't meet the current AS3000 requirements. This often leads to switchboards and wiring having to be upgraded anyway. So if you bite the bullet and do the upgrades from the start, you are far less likely to end up with unexpected surprises. Of course all electrical work in Australia is required to be performed by a licenced electrical contractor.
