Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Aug 14, 2015 10:39 pm Hi guys, As stated this is our first full house renovation (to be rented).. would love any advice/tips from seasoned or other first time attempt renovators... anything from money saving to what not to do's to really good trades all appreciated!! Regards, Lara and Chris! Re: FIRST RENOVATION TIP/ADVICE 2Aug 17, 2015 8:48 am 1. Weigh up the costs of doing things yourself vs a tradie eg. painting. At the same time, if you keep ringing around you might just get that one tradie that will do the job at a decent rate (weighing up quality v value). 2. Don't tell the tradie that you will be renting out your property. Unless you are happy with the price range. 3. It's going to be rented, the difference between those $150 shower fittings vs $40, does not mean you will get it back in rent. So go for value but of course look at future maintenance of an item that might cause you a problem in the future. 4. If you are going to tile, avoid as much possible light grout colours. 5. Use a tradie/ service finding website eg service central amongst others to reduce your search load. Re: FIRST RENOVATION TIP/ADVICE 3Aug 17, 2015 10:04 am Get as many quotes for trades as you can, but keep in mind that you often get what you pay for. I would prefer to pay a bit extra for a company that has been recommended by a friend, rather than picking someone out of the phone book.
