Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jul 14, 2015 4:44 pm I am embarking on a project to build a music room / studio in an old double-brick garage. I have gutted the garage and the first step is to put in a new ceiling. I plan to use Gyprock Soundchek, which weighs 13 kg/m2. The old ceiling was just thin masonite. My question is (1) Do the old ceiling joists need to be strengthened to take the heavier plasterboard? (I think they probably do.) (2) What is the best/easiest way to do this? Existing joists are old hardwood approx 25 mm x 90 mm and span across 3 metres with no support/bracing. They are approx 65 cm apart. See photos here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing Thanks! One solution is to install new ceiling joists of a suitable size to support the new ceiling, The nominal spacing of the new ceiling joists should be no more than 600mm.
