Any improvement is better than nothing seeing as in winter your ceiling lets out 25-30% of the heat in a room. Oliver1 you need to check out any comparison of external walls to see how poorly double brick is actually rated. Each brick width has an R value of 0.08 plus the cavity has an R value of around R 0.12 for a total of around R0.3. A brick cavity wall with sarking and R2.0 batts will give you a value for that wall of around R2.5. A much better solution thermal wise. Stewie Re: Value of roof insulation if walls not done? 3May 26, 2015 10:36 pm Our double brick house was built in 1947 and it is OK in summer up to about 33º after which it just sucks up the heat and then after the sun goes down it releases this back into the house.( Thermal mass at its worst ). In winter it's OK but not the best . The one thing this house is though is solid plus being on rock we don't have any cracks in it at all apart from some minor crazing of the internal render. Stewie Re: Value of roof insulation if walls not done? 4May 26, 2015 11:20 pm thanks for the comments Oliver1, Stewie D. The house has a single-brick+plasterboard downstairs, and plasterboard+weatherboard upstairs. Nice and cold in winter, and baking in summer. If the roof is going to let out 25-30% of the heat then it's probably worth a little effort. It's a rental, so I won't be pulling the walls down, but a bit of effort in the roof will probably make the family a bit more comfortable. thanks Re: Value of roof insulation if walls not done? 5May 27, 2015 6:35 pm Think of it this way, back in the old days when there aren't really many insulation materials for walls etc. The most logical way is go for double brick instead of weatherboard. Nowadays, we have tons of different ways to insulate a house. I have seen people putting insulation in double brick house during renovation. So it works. To answer your question, always something is better than nothing. Roof insulation is the easiest to put on and it does have effect on rating. I work with owner, he/she is my man on the ground and I instruct them when to visit the site and take photos and I have other tools in the bag. 4 15265 I am in the same situation, would you be able to give some insights in to this? I am in SA 8 17046 1) I had requested R6 ceiling insualtion batts, however I noticed that on some areas there are huge gaps which will allow hot air to sweep in, and also noticed black/grey… 0 3597 |
