Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Apr 29, 2015 3:11 pm We are getting ducted evaporative cooling with our new house, as part of the house price (we managed to wrangle that one before agreeing to working with this builder). I think to upgrade from ducted evap cooling to ducted refrigerated air con, through the builder, may cost us a small fortune. If we just get the evap cooling, I will probably end up wanting to install a large split system cooler in our main living area, mainly to be used on those REALLY hot days. This will likely cost around $2,500.00 - $3,000.00 alone. So, I am thinking we will go ahead with the evap cooling, as it is included in the house price, but we may consider uppgrading to the ducted air con later on. Does anyone know if you can replace an evap cooling unit with a refrigerated air con one, and use the same ductwork? I figure that this may be a cheaper way to do it (also, we can save for the air con unit, rather than adding another cost on to the house price now), but just not sure if it can be done.....? I know I can ring an air con company, and ask, but I don't really want the hard sell, and thought someone on here might know, or might have done it..... Thanks in advance My blog: tashandpaul.wordpress.com Re: Changing ducted evap cooling to ducted air con? 2Apr 29, 2015 4:48 pm The short answer is no. You can't really upgrade evaporative cooling to refrigerated ones. The ducting for evaporative is usually much larger as it needs to move air in much bigger volume to be effective. Also, not all evaporative ducting is well insulated which is required for refrigerated. My suggesting would be either stick with evaporative and add split when you think it is needed or bite your nail and upgrade to refrigerated once and for all. Re: Changing ducted evap cooling to ducted air con? 4Apr 30, 2015 9:16 am Thanks guys, I did a bit more research myself last night and agree with you - I am going to look into upgrading the ducted heating to both heating and cooling, and getting rid of the evap completely. Will ultimately come down to cost. We can afford a bit but not if it is a huge amount. Will also depend on if our builder will give us a credit for taking away the evap cooling (fingers crossed).... My blog: tashandpaul.wordpress.com Re: Changing ducted evap cooling to ducted air con? 5Apr 30, 2015 8:56 pm A suggestion for you. You might not really get much credit back from builder on the evaporative cooling. You might as well take it and try to see if you really need to upgrade to refrigerated one. Just need to make sure addon for cooling can be added to your ducted heating at later stage. Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
