Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Mar 21, 2015 3:35 pm We are currently getting quotes for a very large extension. The house at the moment has (ugly) brick exterior which we plan to render. At the moment the house is a rectangle. When the house is completed with the extension it will be a U shape. We dont want to repeat brick on the extension and we are looking at using other building materials. I am rather new to this and I have been given a different opinion from different builders on using blue board. I have been told it can crack over time?? And has bad insulation properties and we will need insulation in the wall. We are looking for a cheap and quick material. I have also had the suggestion of cladding from James Hardie - which I do find appealing. Has anyone had any experience using blue board and had it crack? Also does anyone recommend a panel system? BTW we live in Brisbane QLD so insulation properties are important. Re: Blue board?? and recommendations for a panel system 2Mar 21, 2015 11:24 pm If you want cheap and quick, then blueboard will meet your needs as long as you don't also want a quality long lasting finish. Go for brick, either cheap common bricks or larger bricks designed for rendering. Re: Blue board?? and recommendations for a panel system 3Mar 22, 2015 8:44 pm It is basically your preference on looks. All light weight cladding walls need insulating not just the likes of blueboard. This basically means everything except brick walls must have insulation. Blueboard might be cheap, but don't forget to add rendering costs. One main reason you might get cracking is improperly supported or positioned joins I haven't done a direct cost comparison, but I would have thought some of the grooved panel systems in the Hardies range would be comparable to the complete blue board system. Generally the planking systems (linea etc) and Matrix systems add up a bit with higher product prices and higher labour time Re: Blue board?? and recommendations for a panel system 4Mar 23, 2015 9:24 pm Google weathertex panels...
