Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Feb 24, 2015 5:31 pm Hi all, Our house is on a moderately sloping block, falling away from front to back. The house is set off the ground on concrete stumps, with clearance of around 500mm at the front, to ~1200mm at the rear corner of the house. I am looking at installing some cladding (MasterWall), and carrying this through to just above ground level (clearance to avoid direct contact with the ground). Currently there are timber battens attached to one side of each concrete post (haven't inspected too closely at this stage to see how), but will need to essentially build in these areas with timber frame, flush in line vertically with the rest of the external wall frame, in order to run my cladding sheets flush up the wall. Some people suggest drilling/fixing off to the concrete stumps is OK, but the majority opinion seems to be not to, so I'd prefer to play it safe. Would a (snugly) pre-assembled frame, attached with high strength liquid adhesive to the concrete stumps, and fixed at the top directly to the bearer do the job? I also thought that putting a bracket (something like a joist hanger) around the back of the stump wouldn't hurt. The cladding fitted off to the outside would largely stop the frame behind from pulling inward, and the bracket would help stop any forward movement (hope that makes sense!). Input and expertise appreciated! Thanks, Damien Re: Attach timber frame between concrete stumps - best metho 2Feb 24, 2015 7:14 pm A lot of carpenters use hoop iron to fix the timber upright to the concrete stump. Then you frame out from there. There are more expensive methods but tying on with hoop iron is common. All battens I've seen in the past have the rails dyna bolted and I don't see a problem. Another way if you are worried about it is to run some braces out of the same framing material on an angle back up to the underside of the joists. I have done this on large spans before to stiffen the middles, but of course only when it doesn't interfere with the use underneath Re: Attach timber frame between concrete stumps - best metho 4Mar 11, 2015 12:30 pm Having now removed most of the existing timber/cladding that was attached, I've found that most stumps (those that I've checked closely enough) actually have one or two holes pre-drilled through them. That should make life a whole lot easier - will be able to bolt straight through! 4 7069 Old Home Restoration / Renovation Cheers mate! This is exactly what I was thinking but wasn't sure if it was something I'd find on the shelf.
