I'm planning to build a deck (9.4m x 5.6m) close to the ground using galvanised stirrup posts. I'm trying to work out the bearer and joist sizes. Looking at the span tables it states bearers as 2/90×35, 2/120×35 etc. What does the '2/' stand for? I was thinking about doing this, does it seem right? Bearers 90mm x 90mm - posts span every 1500mm and 1800mm between bearers Joists 90mm x 45mm - 450mm apart Any feedback is appreciated Re: Deck bearer spans for bearers and joists 2Dec 28, 2014 6:37 pm the 2/# means two timbers fixed together so they act together and share the load. For bearers I would use 120x70 instead of 90x90. Same cost but stiffer. If the deck is close to the ground the timbers should be termite and rot resistant. Seconded; we just used these last weekend to build a small deck. They worked perfectly as we have bluestone in the area where we wanted to build so digging down was not… 8 7417 Hi Mrboh Just wondering if you have any BAL or flame zone issues on your block, as getting compliance with BAL requirements whilst doing bearers and joists is tough.
