Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Dec 15, 2014 9:37 pm The house we're renovating has fireplaces, that probably once had cast iron grates/fireplaces in them. However, at some stage the grates have been removed and the fireplaces had large sheets of wood "no more nails" and screwed over the top. When we removed these to have a look a lot of the plaster came away from the bricks. The plaster looks very sandy, and the research I've done suggests it's a sand/cement type render. My thought is that if the plaster came away easily in one room it will probably do it in all the rooms. Is this a hard DIY to do, and are the ingredients easy to find? I'd rather re-plaster the walls to match the original rather than a more modern equivalent, but I have a feeling this is not an easy DIY Thanks Kathy Re: sand/cement render on internal walls - Federation era ho 2Dec 16, 2014 7:34 am Hi Kathy You will find it's a lime mortar and it's not very structural Once you start chipping away you may never stop...handle with care Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Hi, Currently building, we are on a sloping block so we have from floor level to the roof in axon cladding.
