Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Dec 04, 2014 2:31 pm Hello I am new to this forum and new to DIY. We have just brought our dream house which also happens to be a renovator. Feel a bit out of my depth at the moment so will be looking for some help and advice from all you more experienced people Does anyone one know of either an ipad app or website that is EASY to use and will allow me to draws plans of my house putting in the windows and internal walls etc? I am trying to decide where to knock down and rebuild walls. I have a complete bathroom / laundry reno to plan, at the moment there is a very large bathroom and separate large laundry and I am wondering if I can make this is into an ensuite, family bathroom and smaller laundry. Thanks for any advice. PTC Re: App or website for drawing house internal walls etc 2Dec 04, 2014 2:36 pm Download Trimble ( formerly Google ) Sketchup for free. Bit of a learning curve but you can achieve some great results. Their online 3D warehouse had gazillions of models that you can import to use - once again for free. It had 2D for plans, elevations etc and 3D capabilities so you can see the whole house as an isometric model. Stewie Re: App or website for drawing house internal walls etc 3Dec 04, 2014 4:50 pm sketch up is good, but as stewie said - its a decent learning curve. http://www.homestyler.com/ Go to 3d floor planner. Thi is probably the most intuative browser based software ive used for this specific purpose. also available as an app (not saure if the app costs though). The browser based version is totally free. Will also check out the other ones thanks. I have been using graph paper so far but thought there must be something out there. Maybe there's a gap in the market! Re: App or website for drawing house internal walls etc 7Dec 05, 2014 4:00 pm patthecat Maybe there's a gap in the market! lol, nope. that gap is squarly filled up with an abundance of solutions, from the basic (pen and paper) through to the architechtual solutions (auto cad etc). Youre new to this, so just check out all the solutions and pick the one that works for you. But paper and pen is your simplest solution. It doesnt have to be to scale. You just need to be able to convey your vision to be able to refer back to it. before you go knocking walls out thought, i think you will need to get somone out to tell you what is load bearing and what is Ok to knock out. Also to let you know where you might encounter asbestos. These things an app wont help you with. Re: App or website for drawing house internal walls etc 8Dec 05, 2014 6:15 pm There are those that are free but a bit restrictive, then there are some that are quite good in the $100 range , then there are the full on CAD packages like mine that are around $4,500 and a lot higher. If all you are after is something to draw 2D floorplans and maybe elevations then any of the freebies will do you fine. Stewie Re: App or website for drawing house internal walls etc 10Dec 30, 2014 1:42 pm Hi Patthecat, I'll give you my un-biased opinion (even though this is exactly the service my company provides). You will be able to model your house using a number of different packages/apps. All of these have a learning curve, and without spending some money will only give you limited end products. I would suggest that arrange to have your house and site modelled (from your existing plans that are available from the council). If this is done properly, you should have 3d models on your desktop computer, tablet or smartphone. This should be relatively inexpensive and will save you a lot of time. With these as your platform, you can focus on the design for your renovations. Feel free to contact me offline if you want to know any more. Darren.
