Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Nov 24, 2014 7:22 am Hello, We are planning on doing a renovation of our place and I am considering sourcing some vintage pieces to keep the traditional look of the outside of the house. I have located two sets of french doors with frame to open up onto the balcony. I have also found some vintage double hung windows but they come without the frames. Has anyone had experience with using something like this... Is it easy enough to get someone to frame them? (Our carpenter I'm guessing?). Also is it expensive to do it this way (the windows I have found are very reasonably priced but I am wondering if that is just because the expense of re framing will make it less viable) and do they work well once they have neem re framed. Happy to spend the money but not keen if it means the windows will be difficult to operate. Thank you. Re: Reframing vintage windows 2Nov 24, 2014 8:50 am For double hung windows you are better off going to a joinery shop and getting them to hang them in a frame. If they were just casement windows the timber is just a rebated reveal on three sides and a hardwood sill and anyone with a bit of experience can knock those up pretty quickly from standard profiled timber. If you have a closer look at any double hung windows in situ you'll see that they are a lot more complicated - pulleys, weights, cord, small beads etc. The doors are similarly easy to hang as per casement windows.
