Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Nov 16, 2014 10:00 pm We're putting in new timber flooring in the kitchen and chosen Vic Ash for it's reasonable quality and being economical. But I'm seeing something which is quite wrong with the timber after being laid. I'm quite a novice with this and hope to get some opinion if I'm right or is this just normal. Have a look of these photos, there are gaps in the flooring and they look kind of wet. The flooring person told me that it is normal because they are of standard grade. And that they will look fine after polishing. I need a third party opinion on this. Thanks everyone! There are always issues with timber floors, they are a natural product after all but I think the expectation of the finish needs to be managed better prior to install. If the installer said straight up three might be some movement or variations then you probably accept a bit here and there but if they are selling you another expectation get them back!! Re: Defect in VIc Ash Timber Floor? 3Nov 17, 2014 1:41 pm What is your original floor or should i say what are the T & G flooring strips being attached to - slab on ground or raised on piers sheet flooring ? Also how are they being attached - glue only or glue plus secret nailing ? It just looks to me like they haven't clamped them up tight enough. There shouldn't be any gaps anywhere. One of those pictures looks like there is a gum vein running down the length of the board which should have been cut off. Yes it will look fine after they fill with putty and polish it but it will not be perminate and the putty will eventually fall out. Tassie oak isnt that hard and shouldn't be that hard to work with as is the case if you where working with something like grey ironback. Re: Defect in VIc Ash Timber Floor? 5Nov 18, 2014 12:37 am Thanks for all your feedback!! Stevie D: the floor is installed on raised piers. Not sure if glue or glue+secret nail. Does the difference mean they are harder to re-do? Will be talking to the supervisor about this tomorrow morning. Hopefully they are willing to re-do. We still don't know if this timber flooring is being installed over the original sheets or straight onto the floor joists. If you are going to accept it, just polish as is. If you want the gap filled, get a tin of urethane and a big syringe, and keep going filling the gap until it is proud.
