Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Sep 17, 2014 3:09 pm We are looking at potential designs for an extension and just wondering what people think of our current idea in terms of orientation and location of living areas. This is our current house plan on our block, north being straight up in the direction of the back left corner. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is our current extension idea. Iād like to have full length wall of glass doors/windows between lounge and patio, and then have a lot of windows to the other side wall as I like bright and sunny areas. What size eaves would be recommended and would full length windows from the floor be okay in the lounge room or a big prob for heating/cooling? We live in Perth so temperate weather. Thanks! Re: Passive Design for Extension Advice 2Sep 17, 2014 9:05 pm You work out your eaves on the East West and North sides so that they are wide enough to exclude the summer sun from your window and door sills but allow the warming winter sun in. I have a sketch I did of the sun angles for this. I'll dig it up. Have you seen this thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=55057&hilit=+orientation Stewie Re: Passive Design for Extension Advice 4Sep 18, 2014 11:33 am This diagram gives you an idea of the path of the sun ( note it is northern hemisphere sketch so just flip east and west ). http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc455/stewiesno1/Picture2.png This sketch gives you a good example of how you can protect your external windows and doors from the harsh summer sun while still allowing warming winters sun in for passive solar gain. By sliding your eaves in or out and/or raising the sills you can get it pretty precise. The summer sun in this one should also be 21st December not June. http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc455/stewiesno1/Picture1.png Where you have doors ( sills at floor level naturally ) and windows ( standard is probably 1000mmm off the floor for most window sills ) on the one elevation, you'd work out your eaves for your doors then probably use awnings ( or any other shading device ) on your windows or vice versa depending on your preferences. It is also becoming more common for passive solar designed houses to have different eaves overhangs on different elevations - 450mm for E & W and 600mm for North for instance.
