Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Sep 11, 2014 8:37 pm Hi There I’m planning my first deck & pergola and would love some help. Here are the questions I have – below are pictures and details that should help illustrate what is going on. Cheers Tim 1. Are the bearers, joists, rafters and beams sufficient for spans? 2. What is the best method to attach pergola posts in this situation – I have an idea, but looking for validation and/or alternates. 3. Nails or screws for decking? 4. Any other advice? Basic details: - 36 Square Meter deck (12m wide, 3m deep) attached to side of brick veneer house in Sydney. Will also have pergola with plastic roof sheeting. - Sloping land, approx 400mm clearance on one side and 1500mm clearance on other side (between ground and bearer) - There will be a privacy screen on both sides, a balustrade along part of the front and a long 'stadium seat/step' along the front. - Engaged brick piers along side of house, row of piers through middle and double brick wall around perimeter – wall will be retaining fill used to level yard (drainage in place) - Will use ant caps/strips - Concrete footings to rock Deck & pergola framing - Bearers: 90 x 70 Treated Pine H3 F7 running longways. Max span 1500. - Joists: 90 x 45 Treated Pine H3 F7, spaced at 450 centres. Max span 1500. - Decking: Merbau 90 x 19 - Four Posts along front, spaced 4m apart. 90 x 90 Merbau. Looking at notching out the bottom so they sit in the corners on both the joist and bearer and bolting through. Is this sufficient? (see mock up with scraps of timber and cardboard). What about wind uplift? - Beam (between posts to support rafters) 240 x 45 H3 F7 Treated Pine. - Ledger for Pergola roof: 140 x 45 H3 F7 attached to side of house (through connected to frame) - Rafters: 140 x 45 H3 F7 Treated Pine with Joist Hangers. Will block between. So with that brick wall enclosing it ?. My money would be going scyon flooring sheets (or fibre cement sheets) and tiles. No oiling painting decks ever, no loose floor boards, no spidies crawling up either. Decks are so 1960's. But each too their own, tiles are very italian i suppose Design from top down to ground , build from ground up Re: Deck Advice! 6Sep 13, 2014 5:48 am This is my most recent deck and extension.
