If the timber used is say 20mm thick then each piece would need to be housed 10mm into the other. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halved_joint There are other ways like dowelled joints too or using small nails to simply pin the smaller lengths in between the longer strips but the half housed joint is what I would use.
